Thanks to everybody that responded. I'm sure many people aside from myself got a lot of sound advice from all of you. Thanks again.

I've never wore blaze orange before or had any reasons to. When I'm out moose hunting, I see a few people, but never when I'm in the woods. Heck, I don't even hear gunshots. But if I was in a situation, like say, I lived in the Lower 48, then no doubt about it. Especially heavily populated areas like California, etc.

It is a must in Calif if you want to keep from getting shot at.

Way too many yahoos out here.

I try to get out where other hunter are not likely to follow, so as a result I am in full camo. If I was in an area with high hunter pressure I would then opt for a blaze orange hat.

I wear all black and spraypaint the word "MAN" in white letters on my chest and back...haven't been shot yet!

Camo when alone and blaze when there's people around.

Black is the worst color to wear --- you don't need to see antlers on blackbear which share the season with deer in most zones.

That's why I stop using my black backpack when they changed the dates on bear season a few years ago.

Most of the time during gun season I wear an orange cap- I think it help others to see me much better. I sure hope all hunters out there wear orange. But I don't think it shoud be law.

I like your thinking and glad I read the post. At over 300 pounds, I probably do look like a champion bear from a distance. Orange it is.

In D zone orange hat, a lot of times a bright blue fishing shirt and a pack with a blaze panel on the back. We've got a lot of boneheads out there.

I don't wear blaze orange. But, I usually wear a red ball cap and flannel. I figure if they are going to shoot me in red, they'll shoot me in orange.

Wear it. I have a vest I wear over my backpack and an orange hat. There will be idiots shooting regardless of what your wearing, but it's better than not having it. One of the guys shot here a couple years back was shot be someone who had picked up a rifle a week or two before, mounted a scope and hit the woods. He shot at a buck at a long piece and was way, way off and managed to hit a hunter. That hunter was wearing orange but the shooter got soo keyed on the buck he saw he just shot.

I do believe I heard a story where a hunter was actually shot in a tree stand. I do not know if he was wearing blaze orange.

Just wear them for your own safety... even if you will look dorky in it.

I try to wear a blaze orange hat after the below 2 examples. I realize that hunters can still get shot wearing blaze orange but it does help the careful and responsible hunters from making a mistake. No system is perfect but it does make you safer.

When elk hunting a few years ago in Oregon, a male over 50 fatally shot a teenaged hunter on his first hunt and wounded his uncle. Everybody put on orange vests after that. While walking a deer drive on hunt in X4, I was amazed that I couldn't see a fellow hunter wearing only camo from approximately 30 yards away in pines and heavy brush. I was, however, able to see then next guy 10 yards past him because he was wearing a blaze orange hat.

Here's my scary story:

I shot at and hit a buck in Wyoming a few years ago. He entered the timber below me, coming towards me after I shot him. I aimed my scope to the clearing on my side of the timber and started scanning the openings, waiting for him to emerge so I could fiinish him off. Needless to say my adreneline was up, my safety was off, and I was ready to fire another shot as soon as I saw him again.

I caught movement to my left, something entered the clearing. I swung my rifle over while looking through the scope and put the crosshairs on the object, ready to fire.

Some dumb ass hunter saw my buck pass by him, saw he was wounded but still moving, and started following my deer. Damn lucky I didn't have a heavy finger.

I caught up with my deer and finished him off with a shot to the head.

WEAR ORANGE!

I wear it in colorado because it is required and because there are so many deer I dont think it hurts my chances but in california I sometimes dont think to wear it because I feel like I stand out and my camo is just more easy and comfortable.
