The BLM publishes a special packet of maps that show the boundaries of all of the parcels on the Central Coast and access points. It is known as the "pig hunting map packet."

Costing just $4, you can order it with a credit card by calling the state BLM office in Sacramento at 916-978-4400 or the Hollister BLM office at 831-630-5000.

There is more BLM map and hunting information on the Internet at www.blm.gov/ca/hollister/recreation.html.

I hope they have improved this map packet, from the ones the used to send out. I sent away for them years ago and was saddly disappointed, very faded xerox copies of "old" maps not showing any detail, with a felt, saying they were worthless was an understatement. Todays technology probably allows for greater detail and hopefully these maps are better.

Maybe we can all chip to buy one of these maps and if it still sucks were only out a few pennies.

Actually I broke down and I bought the Maptrails BLM addition for CA and I was shocked to see so many discrepancies. There is a well known piece of BLM land near me that gets pounded hard, it's on their hard copy map, but not on the software sold and authorized by them...
Be very careful and use a good map preferably a 7.5 that came directly from their office.

I talked to the counter lady at the Hollister BLM office about 2 years ago and she was even sceptical of the accuracy of the maps and updates. She told me "the Guy" ( yeah just one ) Who works on theese maps has been spending allot of time converting them to Computer format and trying to keep up with all the new and sold lands that he hasn't had time to update the printed versions. But she did sarcasticly wish me luck and pointed me to a few spots where I would have better luck. Usefull.....questionable, worth the 4 bucks and the talk with the counter people about what areas are likely to produce.......I guess so.

BLM open to deer to but check with regs first some places (like cottenwood) are draw only for the first week. BLM Deer is problly 10 times less likely than BLM pig and we all know how often that happens.

I haven't bought an A tag in years; but almost all of my "A" deer came off BLM land. Get the maps, study them, drive a million miles before season opens to get your bearings. Scout early, much earlier than now; and you will be successful.

btw - Cottonwood Creek is dfg land,

I dunno, BGH... I have seen a lot more deer than hogs on BLM land.

I think I saw six or seven deer in three hours Saturday evening on a little parcel of BLM property. Only saw two yesterday morning, but I was in the wrong place when the sun came up and didn't get back across canyon until late morning.

Of course, when the rifles come out on the 12th, all bets are off for deer or pigs.
