I guided a hunt this last weekend with five hunters. Here's the story and some pictures. Enjoy.

Friday
The guys get to the ranch around 5 PM Friday so we only have a few hours until sunset for our Friday hunt. Once everyone is ready I pick up four out of five hunters from the ranch house in my truck. I drop the four hunters off at one end of the property where they wait, ready to start Pushing through brush. I go back and pick up the fifth hunter from the house. I take the fifth hunter, aka the Blocker, to a hill about a mile from where I dropped off the first four hunters. Once I get to the hill with the fifth hunter in position, we radio the first four hunters telling them to start their Push toward us. The idea is that pigs will be Pushed toward where we are waiting to Block the pigs.

I had told the guys Pushing through brush that they don't have to be quiet. They can make noise as they Push, because if they are too quiet, its possible to walk right right past pigs bedded down in vegetation. Turns out the hunters were a little too loud during their Push though, because the pigs were getting spooked out of brush too far ahead of them. One of the Pushers saw pigs but the pigs were too far ahead of the Pushers to present a shot opportunity. We finish the Friday hunt and although there were no shot opportunities that day, at least one of the hunters saw pigs.

Saturday
Its the next day now. This time we start off around sunrise. This hunt we're hunting the opposite end of the property. We have the same strategy. I pick up four out of the five hunters and take them to the edge of the property to be Pushers. This time a different hunter gets his chance to be a "Blocker." I pick up the fifth hunter, aka the Blocker, and we stop the truck and walk a few hundred yards to where we will wait and Block. We are approximately one mile from where the four Pushers are waiting for us to radio them. We radio the Pushers and tell them we are in position and that they can start their push.

I stay with the Blocker and we don't see any pigs. Finally, we see the Pushers approaching us. We radio the Pushers and tell them to pause their push and stay there while we jump back in the truck and move on to the next location where we will Block again. Our plan is once we are in position again at the next Blocking location we will radio the Pushers and tell them to continue with their Push toward us.

We're halfway walking back to the truck when we hear gunshots. I look out to my right and see two pigs running over rolling hills. We jump in the truck to pursue the pigs! These pigs were not very smart because they were not seeking cover. Instead we see them running away from us over rolling hills and we're able to gain on them. My hunter tells me to stop the truck because we are on one of the rolling hilltops and he feels like he has a shot opportunity. His first shot misses but that turns out for the better. His first missed shot causes the pig to take a sharp left, presenting the side of its body to us. This presents a more favorable body shot opportunity, much better than an "up the arse" shot. My hunter aims and fires.

After we regroup, I snap some pictures.

Here's the pig we pursued over the rolling hills. No, it wasn't an eye headshot. A bird landed on this sow's head and pecked the eye.

Turns out one of the other guys shot a boar and it tumbled down the bank into the pond after being shot. It was in murky water and it took some wading around for it to be recovered.

This 202 LB boar had a broken jaw and a missing tusk. His tusk had been missing a while because it had started to re-grow. Had this 202 LB boar lost his tusk fighting another boar for territory? Could there be another boar out there even bigger and badder than this 202 LB beast? Find out soon.

Every time i see one of these hunts i can picture the whole thing going down and where abouts you guys were, and this sounds bad ass. Not happy about my cottonwood record boar getting beat i think mine was 196,but i knew it was bound to happen, i know there are bigger pigs out there just a matter of finding them. i think i jumped a 250 plus when we were out there in February. Looking forward to the rest of the story and save some pigs for me, ill be back, this place is awesome and still continues to produce.

It turns out that in that same skirmish with pigs, one of the other Pushers shot a pig on the other side of the pond. To get there we have to take the truck all the way around. Once we get over there to retrieve the pig I realize we have another large boar on our hands, one that looks even bigger than the boar with the broken tusk & broken jaw. Once we get this guy weighed (pictures below) it turns out he is bigger than the first 202 LB boar, weighing in at 216 LBs. This guy been through some battles. He has all his tusks in one piece but has battle scars on his ears-- no doubt cut up from fighting with, perhaps our other 202 LB boar. These boars are roughly the same size with similar tusks. The two boars were shot within a quarter mile of each-other. Could they have been boar brothers, rough-housing over territory?!

Perhaps with these two boars taken off the ranch, other boars will step up and take over their territory. We get back to the house and get the pigs hanging and the guys get to work skinning.

The weekend isn't over. It is only Saturday morning at this point in the story and the hunters are here until Sunday.

Wow look at the tusks on those two bad boys. Two great boars and it sounds like the group had a blast! Eric, great job on putting your hunters on the pigs again. Hoping to hunt with you again sometime in the near future.

Thanks-- Wish I knew the exact length... I will have to carry a little tape measure with me on the next hunt!

Yea those tusks were nice. I convinced the guy with the 216 LB boar to take the head home for a european mount-- thank's for putting me in-the-know about euro mounts.

@mischief209
Nice catch! Yes I did move it. The original location was in possibly the worst place for the summer heat-- way too much sun in that location. I moved the skinning station to a shady carport nearby (much cooler there) and I have a chest freezer filled with ice right there in the carport. If business goes well maybe I'll get a walk-in cooler next year!

Thanks all.

It's awsome to see your business flourishing Erik, it's looking like your client base is building between Mischief209, HuntingBret, and our team we can possibly take up three months out of a year easy! Nice job on moving the skinning station, nice and shady. Ask the upcoming hunters to save some big ones for all of us lol!! I'm going to have to change my strategy on the next hunt to see if i can score one of those big guys! The BBQ on Sat went crazy. Half the freezer emptied, and had to keep putting more out!!!

Another point to add is that Eric is a nice guy, his ranch is loaded with big and small pigs for the taking, and the very best part is that it is only 30 mins away from home for me.

Saturday Continued

So far I have told the story of shooting the first three pigs. The fourth pig was actually shot while we were on our way to go retrieve the 216 LB boar (I'm telling the story in the order of when each pig was shot-- not necessarily the order of when the pictures were taken!).

A couple of the guys are already back at the house with their pigs, working on dressing/skinning. In my mind, I wasn't even thinking about hunting. I was actually just thinking about retrieving the boar and getting it into the truck. I have to thank my sharp hunters for keeping their eye on the prize at this point. The three hunters I'm with are riding in the bed of the truck. We stop at a cattle gate. Before I can get out, one of the hunters jumps out of the truck and volunteers to open the cattle gate. As he's opening the gate, the guys in the truck bed hear some noise...

"Hey are there cattle grazing down there? We hear something big." they say quietly.
"Nope, no cattle down there, must be a pig, go look." I reply, all of a sudden I'm back in hunting mode.

The guys jump out and take a minute to retrieve their rifles from the cab of the truck. The next thing I know we see a pig several hundred yards away, running fast. It must have been the "cow" the guys heard in the bushes moments earlier. My hunter raises his .270.

"Rest your gun on the fencepost!" one of the guys exclaims, quick thinking.
The hunter rests his gun on the fencepost. At this point I'm thinking this is way too far of a longshot.
"Take a shot in front of him, and perhaps it will spook him enough to run back to-" I start to day, but I'm interrupted by a blast from the .270.
The sow goes from a full run, to stopping dead in its tracks. The hunter places an amazing long-distance "sniper-style" kill shot. We all celebrate in amazement at the precision shot!

Thanks for the kind words. I look forward to having you back some time.

Saturday Continued
Normally we take a break in the middle of the day Saturday but this hunt was just non-stop action. This hunt was at a time when oat was being harvested. From the skinning station some of the guys actually saw pigs getting pushed out of the farmland by the farmer on a tractor. Some of the pigs in his crop may have been pigs the hunters spooked INTO his crop during our early-morning hunt.

With a little collaboration, the farmer used his tractor to push some pigs out of the crop, giving a shot opportunity to one of the hunters.

All in all the hunters each took home at least one pig.

Thanks for all the replies & shout out to all the folks who have hunted with me in the past. Thanks for the views & replies. Happy hunting.

The End

Its in Madera county actually. I guide group hunts and my current rate is $250 per person plus $200 per pig, with two nights of lodging included. In other words, assuming each person takes home one pig, its $450 total per person. I need a group of at least four hunters to book a hunt, maximum six. There's more info and pictures on my website.

How far out of madera is your place? I am getting married in early September and I was thinking a pig hunt would be a cool bachelor party. I just don't know if I could get the list down to six or not.

As you can probably tell from the pictures I'm not way up in the foothills/mountains. Its actually only about 20 minutes from the city of Madera. I am only one guide and for now, the way I guide the hunts I have to stick to six people maximum. As for booking, I am working my way down a list of folks in order. There is a chance September will be available but more than likely if you got on the list now I will have some dates available for you in early 2015. I booked up fast because I am only doing one hunt per month as to not over-hunt.

Anyways, if anyone is interested in booking and have any questions, or want to get on the list, feel free to email or private message me.

Just checked out the updated website, looks great, has all the helpful info you could need on there and very accurate on your descriptions of the hunts. All running and gunning. Damn it was fun. 115% success rate, i mean what else could you ask for. Dont think i could even add anything to it for ppl to bring or whatever it could have been, The liquor store is 5 mins away if you find you forgot something or ran out of something. Bring a bbq if youd like other then that you had everything well taken care of. I like the improvement done since we've been there. The skinning rack on the back patio with 3 gambles was a great idea. Keep up the great work see you next year.
