I have a friend up by Bass Lake that wants to hunt some pigs. Whats the best way to get them. Can you hunt them from a feeder. and is there a lot of them up there. Any info would be a help.
I don't know a lot about Bass Lake, although I did look at some property not too far from there. The real estate folks said there were hogs, but on the short tour I took I didn't see any sign. There's a lot of good looking country up there, though.
Some of the other folks might be more able to give you specifics about that area. You might also want to contact the regional DFG folks and ask.
For my part, what I've learned so far about hunting hogs is to get out into the nasty stuff and find sign, then go into the nastier stuff and try to find pigs. They love the oak thickets, and they like to be in wet spots. This time of year, there's plenty of wet, though, so it'd be harder to try to work a water source.
You can definitely NOT hunt them (or any game in CA) from a feeder.
Most of the tiny population of hogs in the area are all on private property. There's really not that many, and it's not worth it unless you own property they're on. In the seven years I was there, only saw 1 transient pig on public property crossing the road. Total fluke. Try the west side(A Zone) Good luck!!!!
A buddy of mine says his brother hunts pigs with dogs somewhere south of Bass Lake, but on private property only. His brother also works up there, so he gets all the info. His brother only carries a .44 mag revolver and says a longer handgun or rifle just won't cut it when he has to chase the dogs. But my buddy was unable to identify any good spots on public land. Same thing down in the foothills southeast of Bass Lake aroung the town of Raymond. Plenty of private landowners there complaining about pigs breaking their fences and ruining vehicles when they run into them crossing the road -- but this is all 2nd hand info and I don't know anyone to ask for permission to hunt.
