Them colored hogs are cool looking, I have seen and killed a number of black ones but never a colored one, especially with toofeses, cool critter.

Congrats, what was his weight and such, and how about a hunt recap?

jb229,
I love your mount. The blonde color, one huge tusk and the torn up ear all add a tremendous amount of character to him

Please disregard any critism if you havn't already.

My experience is pictures often do not do justice to the subject in question. For instance, you ever take a photo of a beautiful sunset or landscape, one that was awe inspiring at the time, only to get the picture back and show it to someone who glosses by it without even stopping. It's because the camera cannot capture all the data we are processing at the time we snapped the photo. The person seeing it was not there, they do not share all the details, sounds ,smells etc... and the overall total experience you had the moment you decided to snap the picture.

Well, same situation here. We are only looking at a picture of a taxidermed hog. We do not share all the data or intricate details of jb229's hunt. How the animal was positioned, where the light was hitting him etc....We can imagine it, but the photo will never have the same impact on us or trigger the same memories of a successful hunt as the mount does for jb229. We simply cannot appreciate it as much as him. We can relate our own experiences, which may be similiar in nature, but will never be exactly like his memories. We are looking at a photo of a hog as a stand alone object. Jb229 is looking at it as an overall experience he felt, smelled and participated in, which I think is why some comments gravitate toward the mere quality of the taxidermy work.

Sometimes we must look beyond outward appearences to find the true value of something.

On a more philisophical note. A mount is just that, a 3-D picture to hang on our wall. A symbol or snapshot of a time in our life when we were successful and happy hunters. Simply, a time in our lives we want to remember. Some say it honors the animal and I guess in a way it does. We erect statues to fallen hero's so they will be remembered, so why not an animal who was a worthy adversary. I have all my mounts in my son's bedroom and I often momentarily stop as I'm going down the hall to look at them and reminisce about all the great hunts and fun I have been lucky enough to experience. I would like to believe many of you do the same.

Sorry for the rambling.......

I thinkthat mount has some very cool character. You shouldnt have any touble thinking up a creative name for him with the distinct features as well.
What people fail to realize is there may have been something special about the hunt that certified your decision to mount your tusker. Maybe it was a tough stalk, or you had hunted him a long time. Whatever the reason, I think its awesome.

Sorry to get off this subject but I have heard that if you use the real teeth from a hog on your mount that they will crack after a while. Is this true? and if so is there some way to prevent that?

I Hunted with:
Tom Willoughby and son Blake. Outfitter & Guide Service (831) 385-3003 P.O.Box 1466 King City, CA. 93930

I can remember the hunt like it was yesterday. We actually hunted the friday afternoon when we got up there. My dads freind got a nice boar that evening about 2in cutters 180-220lbs. We got up early in the morning and set out. I went with Tom and my Dad went with blake. I was using my 243 and let my Dad use my Favorite and a 100% kill ratio with me Savage 308. Needless to say going to the range Friday morning did not help things with my 243, its a remington model 700. Thing is tac driver at the range but the trigger pull is way to hard for shooting at moving targets. I pretty much missed the first 2 pigs I shot at. So we heard on the Radio that my Dad got one so we met up with them and I told my Dad I want my gun back. those guys mob their old chevy pickups through the hills, its a lot of fun. Tom and I headed to another part of the property, started up a road and noticed a pile of pigs under an Oak. We got out and started to walk slowly toward them to close the distance, they spooked and took off. Toms son was above us on the ridge so Tom radioed him to walk towards us and get them to come out of the tall grass. Blake took a few steps and 10-15 pigs took off all except for 1. This Huge boar spun around and started to charge at Blake, he took off running. He ran about 20 yards with this pig right behind him. He dove one way and the pig went the other way. Tom and hopped in the truck and tore around the corner to head it off. I got out and saw the pig running along the hill at about 50 yards. Being that I had been missing all morning I was not very confident in myself so I did not take the shot. We got back in the truck and headed in front of it again. This time it turned toward the truck and i was watching it in the side mirror. I had my hand on the door waiting for the pig to pass me. It ran right past the truck about 5 yards away. I hopped out and had a nice angle on him, pulled the trigger and saw a cloud of dust fly off him. The pig kept running and I circled around and saw him doing the circle dance, put the crosshairs right below his shoulders but did not fire. He dropped about 40 yards from where I shot him.

We got up to him and he was piled at the base of tree. Rolled him down the hill and put him in the truck. Tom estimated his weight at 300-350lbs. I was able to get 100lbs of meat from him, still have a few steaks left.

As everybody knows Tom runs a great guide service. Plan on going back if I can not connect with a pig at lake Sonoma.

Welcome to the site mrsblastmaster, I see this was your first post. You may want to add another one up in the roll call and introductions section as well. Also glad you had your first hog hunt. Don't worry about not getting one, sometimes it takes awhile. Just keep trying and don't get discouraged.

Please give us some more details from your first experience. Where did you go?, any fresh or old hog sign there?, you see any other game? How did you feel about the experience? I bet everyone of the hunters on this site remember thier first hunt.

Again WELCOME ,Keep it up and I'll be watching for your posts.

I've never heard of anyone using the original jaw set or tusks.

I'll toss my opinion in on the real/fake teeth topic. First of all, I think a hogs teeth are as unique as a bucks antlers so to go and use fake teeth would be the same to me as shooting a buck and using fake antlers. In my opinion, the fake teeth sets look pretty good but they still look fake. You can definately tell the difference. Second, don't let anybody convince you that real teeth will crack. I have all real teeth in my mounts, the oldest over 20 years old. Not a crack one in any of them. I know of many mounts that are at least that old and more with the original teeth in perfect condition. The reason taxidermists push the fake teeth thing is because they take the form and plop in the fake jaw set they ordered and its basically done. When using the real sets they have to cut the jaws, clean them, pull the teeth and fill them before replacing them, more work filling the gums etc... If a taxidermist tells you that the teeth will definately crack (I've been told this by more than one) then they are either bs-ing or they are not doing their job right.
