Went out with Tom Willoughby this morning. I was with Tom, my buddy with his son Blake. End result - skinned pigs in the cooler and on the road home at 7am. Hanging at the butcher at 9:30, home by 10... Mine was a toothy boar, 129lbs on the hook, skinned. My buddy's was 80lbs. pig_1.jpg

Nice teeth on that guy, looks like he took one behind the ear. Nice shot!

He did take one behind the ear, but it was a .17. I got him and he went right down. Kicked a couple times and then was still. We went over to look for my buddy hunting/tracking a wounded pig. About 30 minutes later we went up to the boar and he was still breathing. We tried to grab his legs and move him, but he started kicking. Tom got out a .17 rifle and put one in behind his ear. That pig took a lot of killing. My shot was right on the money behind the shoulder. Bullet went into and almost through his armor. Not much expansion on the copper, it was just poking through on the far side.

This rifle is 3 for 3. 1974 Ruger Mod 77 (tang safety) 7mm Mag.
Bullet was a Federal Premium Vital Shock. 160 grain Barnes Triple Shock. P1010851.jpg
It wears a Trijicon Accupoint 3x9 scope with the red triangle post reticle. Didn't really need it on this hunt, but figured that having a bright red aiming point on a black pig in the shadows would be pretty handy. It really is a nice scope.

He and Blake had those pigs skinned before you could blink. I thought the pigs were wearing jumpsuits with a zipper. Tom took a bit longer than normal, I suspect, because he carefully kept mine for the taxidermist...

??? from a newbie. Is the goal to have fun and spend a day outside or just to get the game over as fast as u can and than get home? I know a hunt is not paid for by the hour but seems to me that I wouldn't want to go out for 2 hours and the day b over. any info on that. Its not a can hunt. but over just as fast. sorry that im new. I may have missed sumthing. thanks for the help.

You never know what to expect. I've gone hunting plenty of times and have come home with nothing after a few days of rugged sleeping on the ground, rain, heat, steep hillsides, etc. Sometimes you wait and see critters, get a chance to stalk them, and take one home. In this case, there were no pigs to be seen. Then two came into a field, and we waited. Everything worked out well and he was on the ground soon after. While we were putting him in the truck, a group of maybe 20 pigs appeared just on the hill above us. I go pheasant hunting quite a bit, and some guys get there early, run through the fields and head home after an hour with a bird or two. We typically spend the whole day walking the fields and having a great time. Kind of depends what you're looking for. I was on another ranch a few weeks ago where there were literally over 100 pigs in a relatively small area. Most were sows with tiny piglets, but a few small shootable boars as well. All wild and had free access to the water and good food. Sometimes you're just in the right spot at the right time...

They are all over the state. But you can either try a place like FHL or public land, or you can pay to have a guide and/or access to private ranches. My last hunt was out of San Miguel/King City, a previous hunt was up near Maxwell/Williams...
Where in Ca are you hunting?

Here's an update. Got the mount back from Chad at Central Coast Taxidermy. Nice guy, great work. Now the fun part - getting the wife to let us both stay inside the house...
