Well I have been looking for a long time. I wanted to only spend 500 but I didn't think I would be happy in the long run. So finaly I just did it and bought the Canon Rebel. Here is the first OK picture from my back yard. Feel free to critique.

HCH, Nice shot. I'm assuming you are talking about the EOS 300D? I'm debating that same camera myself. I want a DSLR, but can't decide between a couple different ones. What are your thoughts so far on the Rebel? Also did you buy online or at a local retailer?

I think it was in macro mode. The camera was purchased at wolf camera. I was a little nervous ordering online, with the reputation the camera industry has. Wolf camera had a $50 coupon so the price was close anyway. So far I am very impressed with this camera.

I switched from a Sony F717 to the Canon Rebel and love it so far. I mainly photograph wildlife for articles I write and sell. I also sell some stock photography. When the net first started to gain popularity, I sold quite a few to online magazines, but when the bust came, the market dried up for me since I was shooting digital and most print mags wanted film. I figured if I hung on long enough they'd come around. This month I've got the cover on Tennessee Valley Outdoors. Oddly enough it's a photo from the F717 on the cover. I haven't had the Rebel long enough to get mature antler shots coming into fall. Here are a few that I've taken with mine.

What kind of price did you get and who did you order from? Does anyone know a good place to buy lenses. Are there lenses to stay away from?

The kit lens with the 300 Rebel is an 18-35 mm I think. It wouldn't be very good for wildlife, but is nice for landscapes. I bought the Sigma 2 lens kit with a 28-90 mm zoom and a 100 to 300 mm zoom. I also have a doubler, but do not really like it very much. You loose 2 stops with it, and it's tough to get a good shot with it. I'd like to purchase a 500 mm zoom lens, but gotta save some pesos.

So far I have with the camera two lenses. The 18-55 lens it came with and today I bought a quantaray 70-300. I also have two 256mb lexar compact flash cards. One of the cards is a 40x pro card the other is the cheaper card. The only other purchase was a bag for the camera. Which by the way I can't use with my new lens. Grand total 1357.67

You are right, that lens is an 18-55. When we bought the camera, we actually bought 2. My wife has the other one. We bought one with the package lens that comes with it and the other with the Sigma lens kit which is the same as Quantaray. Quantaray is a Wolf/Ritz brand made by Sigma.

BTW: I made the same mistake with the bag too. The 300 mm lens wouldn't fit.

I bought it online from Buydig.com for $924 w/ the 18-55 lens, 512MB card, camera bag, and lense cleaning kit. Hopefully it will show up tomorrow before my 2year olds birthday party.

Now I see why you bought another lens. I got the camera in today and went down to the San Diego Zoo with the family. Man I need more zoom, too bad my lenses from my Minotla 35mm wont work with the Canon! Oh well, it's only money right?

I watched an independent review of a bunch of camera's from two professional photographers (booorrrinngg) anyway, they rated the Rebel DSLR the best for the price range and said it has a lot of features that even their $8000.00 camera's have

I really liked the interchangability of the lenses. They say that all older Cannon lenses work.

Foulshot, you might want to go check pawn shops for additional lenses.

You don't have to hit as low as a pawn shop. The local camera repair shops will have plenty. Lots of people dump their old equipment when they upgrade - not knowing that the lense may still fit/work.

Sierra, I've charge my battery just once so far and have taken about 100 pics with it. We'll see how long it lasts. It does not come with an internal charger, but it does have a input for 110V if you're near an outlet.
