I was up near Coalinga at Larry Greve's Hogs Wild for a bowhunt for hogs the weekend of March 2, 2001. Don Martin and a bunch of boys from the Bowsite
had a gathering up there. Out of 7 hunters Neal Janousek was lucky enough to stick a meat sow at 10 yards with his longbow. Bow Make/Model - Martin ML-17 Arrow - Wood Broadhead - Zwickey Lil' Eskimo 125 gr.
Quote from Neal, "Staked out a funnel, spotted two pigs coming up the hill heading into the high stuff from 60 yards out. Came straight for us, and as it angled broadside to head up funnel, I locked on white spot that screamed "shoot me here".... After hit, wheeled and headed straight downhill, and painted woods red as it went."
It rained all day Sunday which shut us done pretty good in the muck. Here's a
link to Don's website and the hunt last year, the pics are still coming in from this year's hunt. http://home.att.net/~dcm122170/GSWBB.html
Here's Don cooking up elk steaks Friday night. We were treated to tri tip Saturday night with home baked apple pie. Don and Bill cooked up a storm.
I had a couple of stalks on hogs near the milkweed flat and the wind foiled me on one and the pigs didn't cooperate on the other.
I was just getting back mobile after a twisted up knee so I didn't get up on the steep where I saw many pigs. One time I was glassing about 5 nice porkers and when I put my binos down to take a rest and then put them back up, there was Don right in the same spot. Real ninja in action.
Lots of hogs and some nice bigguns too. The terrain is steep so it is pretty challenging. The bowhunt area is seperate from the other rifle hunt areas.
Neal's daughter Jessica was a real trooper, she kept on glassing for hogs while Neal and me were yaking like a couple of gossiping old women on the ridge.
The ride home was an adventure with the Grapevine closed. I swung east to use the Tehachapi pass and man the winds were gusting over 50 mph there. It's been awhile since I whiteknuckled on my steering wheel in my truck.
Don has another bow hunt planned for May so give him an email if you're interested. His email is at the link above.
