Thanks everybody for coming, that was a great time, what a blast! I really didn't get a chance to say goodbye to a bunch of you, and I want to thank all of you who brought food and did the dinner on Sat. night- 180 Pilot thank you for putting everything together.

We had a couple of opportunities missed today, but everybody got their shots in (on the game intended) so all in all it was a very good day. Jesse's got some killer videos of the turkey birds coming to the blinds and did a excellent job on the turkey calling. He brought those boys in that's for sure.
<

XDHUNTER, good to hear you are home safe. He and his wife even made the trip to Hearst Castle from here. Took about 4-5 hours to get to the castle, do the tour and get back to the resort- and then he hunted that evening and brought in a really nice hog. Congratulations!
Thanks again to everyone! Deedy

Well here goes nothin,
First of all, you won't here any exuses from me, that's cause i don't have a single one!
Jesse did his job,(and did it well) the birds did their part (suckers) and as for me i let
all of us down
<
<
This was my first bowhunting attempt and let
me tell you I was not prepared when the time came to let the arrow fly. Those turkey's
came in like thunder and left almost as fast as lightning. Hunting out of a ground blind
is very different as well. if you are not in position and draw at the right time forget it.
Anyway enough of that, i can chalk those up to a lesson learned, and next time i'll be much
more ready to close the deal. So where it might sound like an unsuccessful hunt, quite the contrary.
Spending two days hunting with 4 or 5 guys who combined have over a hundred years of
hunting knowledge is priceless! So a big THANK YOU to Jesse, Rick, Eric, and Mike.
The barbeque was great, everyone had their fill after a long day's hunt. Also thanks to the
Bryson Hesperia Resort for the lodging and opportunity to hunt for a trophy tom. JHO
(Jesse) also rewarded me with all the turkey hunting gear i need to try another attempt
on my own. I now own a jake and two hen decoys, a boss gobbler call and friction hen
call. Jesse also brought hunting magazines for all to take home
<
I hope to have
the opportunity to hunt with you guys again soon. Until then

First of all thank you for coming, you are a pleasure! I have a few things I'd like to say about "hunting". First of all, trying to shoot a turkey with a bow and arrow is extremely difficult. But around here it's not about killing- it's about hunting. I also want to tell you that everyone that misses feels a certain "grief" factor, but that is also part of hunting. The whole experience of hunting at Bryson Resort is about learning and practicing. And I would have to say that there is a large adrenaline factor too. But I never measure success with dead game.
And certainly Jesse wasn't let down or disappointed. Quite the opposite- he had a lot of fun with you. In my opinion Jesse likes to help guys as much as he likes to hunt, and I think he was extremely happy with the outcome of the weekend. You did great- !

Well said BR,
It's the quality of the experience and comraderie, the taking of the game is icing on the cake, but not the sole purpose.
It's only a part of the process.
It sounds like a great weekend and a valuable life lesson learned.
It's not nearly as easy as one would think.
Tracker, congradulations on a great weekend and hunting experience.
Sounds like you have some nice new toys, friends, some experience under your belt and about 5 weeks left for a stick and string turkey. And hog season is all year long.
Good Luck

Awesome hog and turkey hunting. Thank you Deedy, Karin, Rochelle (new office girl) and Tommy (Blades) Willoughby too for skinng the pigs.
<
Tommy is an artist the way he swings those sharp pieces of carbon steel.

Travis (tracker13) you done good.
<
Having a turkey or elk thunder in your face at 15 yards with a bow in your hands is living. If you ain't drained when your done you ain't alive. I learned a couple things too. 2 blinds is hard since the caller can't see what the shooter is doing. I should have taken a bigger blind with 360 shoot windows. We used a new Eastman's Quickie Blind from ASAT camo and a Ameristep Bighouse. I also should have made sure Travis could do a putt call to stop a turkey for a shot. One bird spooked a bit after arriving and starting to strut at 15 yards. He walked off pretty fast and Travis could have used a putt to stop him. Without knowing if he was ready a putt from me might blow the whole gig cuz the bird is going to diddy once he hears a putt. It's also hard to call and run the video cam. I blew getting Travis' arrow shot on tape when the tom walked off real fast and I had to call to him to make him stop and strut and I didn't swing the cam far enough right. Sorry Travis.
<
You can HEAR the shot REAL good tho on the video.

The boys coming to meet their maker

Travis with new JHO glass friction turkey call. He was pretty down after not getting a 2nd chance so I was hoping the gear took some of the sting away.

turkey_travis_bryson_april_2007.jpg

I also have to take the blame for messing up Westy's first shot at a tom we were calling. He sneaks up for the shot and launches a laser at a fanned out tom at 30 yards. Arrow is heading for the X when it makes a dramatic right turn. Rick came back crying and pointing to the fletching. I had put a Zwickey grappler on his arrow but it was one size too big and slid freely on the shaft. I forgot to take it off after looking for a washer to stop it from sliding. When his arrow launched the force snapped that grappler into the vane which created rudders from the mangalation of the vane. Right turn Clyde.
<
Tom just walked off with a hen to add insult to injury. Later Rick asked me if put that grappler on his arrow on purpose. Naw!!! that would be mean wouldn't it? Where would I learn a trick like that anyway.
<
You wheelie bow guys need something to handicap you and make it challenging right? Just treat your arrow like a cut baseball Rick and you'll do just fine.
<

Rick with sow pig he whacked later at Fort Hunter Liggett.

I got to meet 180pilot and swap war stories and XDhunter and his lovely wife for supper Sat night. Travis made some awesome chile and XD produced some wicked good little sausages. 180 was on the taters.

The fort was the usual kewl place to visit. Water is the key now. Many ponds and reservoirs are dry or about to go dry. Find water and you'll find hogs. XD's tip was find the natural springs.

I've got mostly video so I'll have to get some clips posted here soon.

I did hear more complaints about the FHL check in window again. It took some guys 2 hours to check in on the turkey opener last week. By the time you get to your area and walk in it's 9am. Not acceptable for turkey season.
<
Why even bother driving there to turkey hunt? The window girl also showed up 1/2 hour late Saturday morning other hunters said. She also lets her two dogs run on the counter so you have to fill out your app with a dog dancing on it.
<
If FHL is trying to improve the hunting experience there that have to start by hiring another person to help at the check in window. The window is only open 2 to 3:30 pm on Fridays now. Why can't they do a 5 hour 2 to 7pm shift or something similar so hunters can get their area that night and hit their area first thing in the morning instead of waiting HOURS of prime time hunting for an area at the check in window?

Email Walter Haussamen, the head of the hunting program at FHL, if you have had any problems so we can get that check in window sorted out. Walter.Haussamen@liggett-emh1.army.mil

ya, it was a great trip!!!meeting some new folks, eating some great food.(that sausage of xd's was quite tasty.)dede was a great host, she got me on a bunch of animals ,but i couldnt close the deal.after seeing jesse with pink sunglasses on ,i just couldnt get it together after that.until i finally walked along way from him and sat under a tree at the fort and waited for the sun to go down, and sure enough, those pigs came in single file.the wind wasnt in my favor so i had to take a less than optimum shot.bit it all worked out.and a short drag to the road too.the cabins at dede's were as usual great.and last but not least....her help was smokin hot.im still having bad dreams about those pink sunglasses.i hope i wont have to seek therapy .rick

Westy was operating under severe sleep deprevation this weekend so any stories about me losing my sunglasses and having to use the only pair 7/11 had for sale that day as a backup are tooooooootally fabricated.

Travis if you need tip on your future hunt at fhl i can share some of my secret spot(there is no secret spot on public land) or trade ya with the chili recipe i dont think so ha travis!!!

About my hunt like deedy said its a marathon .left LA 11:30 pm friday got to bryson at 4:30am unload ,went to hearst castle do the property tour do some wine taseting come back and do the hunt and got a pig before dark.shot it 150 yards from the canyon deedy told me to watch.even if its a short hunt its a memorable one like Billrob said it's only icing in the cake, it's the time spend at camp with fellow hunter's count's and priceless.

To the future hunter at bryson listen to what deedy tell you and you have a succesful hunt. her knolage of the area and her energy is first class.
