I went to Montana this last week to elk hunt. We got in on friday the 15th. Our hunt started on the 16th. It snowed a lot on friday night. We woke up to a fresh blanket of snow. We hiked a few miles in the am on the 16th but saw nothing. I was really excited about hearing and seeing elk. I have been practicing for the last month on my elk target at home alternating between my Bowtech and my Mathews. We went out for the evening hunt. The rancher did not want vehicles on the road so my buddy and I and our guide went up to the hunting area on an ATV. My legs were hanging over the side and we drove about 4 miles into the ranch. By the time we got there, I was soaked with mud and water. It sucked. My Primos bow sling was on but still my bow got mud all over it.
We end up at our destination. I have mud about 2" thick on my pants and all over my cam's and string. I make every effort to clean up. Before we started out I thought I would pull back and make sure my stuff is ok. I pull and all of a sudden my string falls off the cam. Now I'm freezing and pissed. The guide says to stay here and he ran back for my Mathews. He got a flat on the ATV but finally makes it back up. I load up my wrapped Gold Tips sporting Blazer Vanes, Lumenoks and Montec G-5's.
Finally hunting!! We are walking a logging road and there are about 100 head of angus that will not leave us alone. They would run at us. Could my night get worse? We moved into the forest to see if they would walk by. We could see thier legs as we were somewhat elevated. The guide cow called but no response. Suddenly I see brown legs which were not consistent with the Angus' legs-------Oh Crap---ELk. I hunker down on my knee's with my backpack still on and a bit awkward. Now all the crap my wife gave me about practicing with my backpack on was going to pay off. So the Bull was walking in and was going to be approx 6 yards. Instead he turns but the guide and my buddy moved back and cow called more. The bull starts toward them. He walks into an opening and I smoke 'em. 26 yards, double lung, clean pass through. We waited a half hour and went back. He had only gone approx 60 yards and was layng there dead. He scored approx 280 and so should make it in the book. It was simply awesome. I was with an outfitter and continued to hunt for deer with no sucess. We did however go into Bozeman and stayed one night at the Hilton so we could drink beer and watch football. It was a great hunt!!!
