Does anyone know where I can get some Nosler Partition ammo? I know Black Hills and Federal loads it (I do not reload) but eveyplace I check they are sold out. Cabelas is the cheapest and they only have the Accubond in the 160 grain which is what I am looking for. Any ideas?

Interesting read. That said, I am not changing my mind on quality rounds from my 30-06 doing the job at 200 yards even though the article says it's too light!

Here's where that author lost all credibility with me "7mm. Mag (marginally)" in speaking of the 7mm ability to put down a hog.

He crazy!

I've shot quite a few deer with my .300 Winmag. None of them got back up after being knocked down. I can't say that for a couple hogs I've shot. This after a fatal shot knocked them down. Pretty impressive to see animal take that kind of whallop and still take off running like it never even got hit. I'd put hogs right up there with bears in that they don't die easy.

Sometimes animals just don't want to give up the ghost. I put a 1 1/8 oz. 12 ga. slug (Brenneke) right through the center of both of a Whitetail doe's lungs, and watched her run across an open field for 200 yards. Very dead when I got there, but they can cover some ground in a partial minute. Even a big, heavy, penetrating projectile doesn't guarantee a bang-flop.

I shot a doe with an older Remington 788 in 243 cal 100 grains BTSP she drop in her tracks. Took out both lungs. I was using Federal 100 grain Sierra game king BTSP P243C. My wife shoot hogs with this gun.

Arrow slinger that was funny what the guy said about the 7MM. My wife also shot this tully Cow Elk 236 yard with 7mm Weaterby mag. Past through shot it went twenty yds. I know this is a wild boar forum but I liketo show off her Elk pic. I got a hunting partner for life. This was at Ft hunter Leggett

I took a look at that article, I've seen the same type of answers applied to deer hunting in a Texas hunting magazine, this fellow insisted on nothing less then a 300 win mag for deer. Kind of laughable, especially when you consider the size of South Texas Deer. I've had bigger dogs. I am a big fan of the 7mm, I own an '08 brazilian mauser in 7x57 and a endero in 7mm mag. I load the excelent speer hot-cor 145 gr for deer and hogs, I've taken several hogs with the mauser and one with the magnum. I actually download the magnum to about 2700 fps and I load teh mauser to about the same velocity. I shot a big boar, went about 350 lbs or so with the sendro at about 65-75 yds, missed teh shoulder itself, complete penetrtion and that pig took off like nobody's business. I was sure I made a good shot, I waited about 10 minutes before following it into the woods. It ha run about 30 yds, I couldn't believe something that big could move so fast. When we field dressed it, there was a huge hole right through the center of the heart. Same hunting trip, my son used my mauser and shot a nice boar at about 125 yds, about 250 lbs, hit the shoulder, massive entrance wound and again, complete penetration. That one didn't run any where. I'm a big fan of the hot-cor, but the partitions work well as do the every day remington core-lokt and winchester white-box variety.

PWA, that's a great pic and a great hunting partner. Congrats on that!

As to the article from TX... dang, I thought I was bad about advocating for plenty of gun! That one makes me look moderate!

Just goes to show... on the Internet anyone can be an expert on anything.

Doc,
420 grain Super Hard Cast gas checked lead bullets only(NOT loaded ammunition) are available on the internet.
Loaded hot, that should give the pass thru penetration on those huge Vancouver bulls. They do not expand but a 45-70 caliber bullet is ALREADY expanded. I do not reload right now but the Garrett 420 grain +P Super Hard Cast ammo we use on our Marlin 45-70's flattens those big 250+ lb. Texas hogs with pass thru's. Those 45-70 hot loads are awesome. 'Nuff said.

165 to 180 Grain Nosler partitions have brought down 2 dozen hogs of varying sizes (50 to 300 lbs) for me. They take care of business like nothing else.....

Damm, according to that guy from Texas I'm going to have to leave my 308 in the safe and buy something like a 338 lapua .Will have the wife read the article so as to justify my new purchase.Idiots like that might be good for something afterall, just don't know what.

Quote: - "I'm still wondering why some folks use Ballistic tips on big game. If you like grenaded hamburger meat that's the ticket for sure".[/b]

I will have to agree with Jesse on the Ballistic Silver Tips. I made the mistake of using a 165 grn. BST (30-06) on a mule deer hunt in the Kaibab. I shot the biggest mule deer of life up to that time with one and spent 3 days looking for it. Jesse was hunting in the area at the time and helped me look for it. The blood trail was minimal and soon was lost. The only thing we found was a couple pieces of rib bone, but never found the buck.

I have yet to kill a hog while hunting, but I tell you from every thing I have read, observed, and people I have talked to these are some very tough animals (especially the big ones).

I would recommend something like a Nosler Partion, Speer Grand Slam, Accubond, or Corelokt.

Mmmm... ballistic tips! I've gone on about these bullets before.... fragmentation grenades like mom used to make!

I've killed a deer and two hogs with ballistic tips before I quit using them altogether. If I'd had better sense, and if they hadn't shot so well out of my rifle, I'd have stopped after the fist-sized entry hole on my blacktail buck.... this with a 30-06. I figured that was a fluke, and a bad shot that hit the spine.

First pig destroyed both shoulders and a chunk of neck meat. I was picking bone fragments and copper out of the meat all the way through. Next pig I shot in the neck, figured I'd save the meat that way... no go. Blood shot and shrapnel all the way into the shoulders, especially the offside.

What I can say is that everything I shot was stone dead. They work. They just suck for meat hunters like me.

Hey Haiku_Rodney,

I was meaning to ask you how consistent you have found ammo to be for the 7mm-08. Have you ever used it for smaller game or varminting? Just wondering how lighter grain ammo has performed for you if you have ever used it. Also what type grain weight have you used for deer or have you stuck with the 140grainers?

The good ol 150gr Core-Lokt worked great for me this past weekend. Checkout my "Success" thread in the hog and javelina area.

I have been looking at some of the non-premium rounds and for a 7MM they seem to be only a few bucks less than premium rounds like Nosler and Barnes. Anyone know why??? I guess the mags. are just more expensive to shoot all around.

I guess I will keep the .308 for plinking...much cheaper!
