I will start by saying I have the Nikons and love them, except for: constant adjustment of focus nob each time I move locations and fogging. I understand fogging may be able to be fixed with some products, but I own a Bushnell riflescoce w/ Rainguard and I must admit it works very well in the cold snowy months of Oct/Nov here in Idaho.

That said, my friend is coming up from California for his first Elk hunt and I told him to get a good set of optics. He is trying to get away with a pair of $100 nikons from Walmart and I am trying to convince him to move up a notch. My research here and elsewhere has led me to the Bushnell Legens w/ Rainguard, Nikon Monarchs, and Leopold Windrivers. I am partial to 10X in this country where long, long views are common. I read on Better View Desired that the Windrivers in 10X50's are excellent(though it is an old review and w/ so many Windriver models I'm frankly not sure which they are). While the 10x50's are a bit bulky, my friend is quite large at 6'5 320lbs, so I think he can handle the size if they are good glass @reasonable price.

I found the Legends for $240 from a fairly reliable source on the net, which is about $60 cheaper than the others, with the raincoating it seems the logical choice. Anybody here use these Legends or have direct experience with them. Please let me know.

P.S. Jesse mentioned previously that they would become a Leopold dealer, did that fall through?

I have a 4200 Elite Scope w/ Rainguard it really works great! Also I own Legend 8 x 42 binos w/Rainguard, phase coated, waterproof etc. and they perform better than advertised.

I would buy booth again, they are that good.

I have the 3200 elite scope and it is great. I am now shopping for binoculars and found the legend 8x42 porro with rainguard and the works for $$116.94 at optics4birding.com http://www.optics4birding.com/legend-8x42-porro-1426.html

Unless anyone has a better suggestion at that price or a better place to buy them, I'll pull the trigger tomorrow and order. They are a bit more bulky than the roof prism, but as long as the weight stays low (24 oz.) that's all that matters. I have to say, optics4birding, which I found through our JHO forum is a great site to learn and compare binoculars.

I have a friend who took a special Alaskan Cruise on a 138 foot sloop with 58 passengers,he used his Pentax 8x binocs which were clearly as efficient as the birders with their high dollar binocs. Tuesday I'm taking a Binoc class with AZ Guide Duwane Adams to learn his method of spotting deer in Oracle,AZ & vicinity using a Velbon EFL-4A tripod and adaptor for my 10x40 instant focus Leupold Binocs. http://www.arizonabiggamehunting.com ph 520-385-4995 class is $250.Duwane had a hunter out today taking his glassing class and they spotted 30 bucks.

I was looking at the Nikon, Bushnell and Browning binocs in 10x42 roof prism. I really liked the Browning, but ended up finding the Bushnell Legends in camo 10x42 on Ebay for $182. Lovem, glad to finally have a quality pair of glasses.

My porro prism version came in last week. In dusk they outperform a $300 pair of roof prism binos (8x42) from eagle optics that my coworker lent me. They are nice and bright. I have not taken them hunting, but we took them to the coast (seals) and they are very nice.

Only thing I am disappointed about is the fact that they are made in China. The elite scope series are made in Japan. But of course, those are 3x more expensive!
