I know some of you have been to FHL lately. Any pics? stories. Don't make us break out the belt sander.

You don't have to name areas, just how's the hunting been?

I haven't been to FHL for a while, but I can report for my friend who goes there once or twice a month. He said that hogs were pretty much taken almost every week. He also said some guy took a 300+lb boar, but haven't heard much about that. He also said that the area thats shotgun only (area 30?) he saw a group of 5, no shots taken since they were far away. Might just as well give FHL a try.

Yesterday I tried to go there from Camp Roberts but when I called the answer machine said the base was closed for hunting and fishing this weekend. Will try again the next couple of weekend.

Went to FHL last weekend. 3 Pigs shot over Sat and Sun. One out of area 10/13 about 207 lbs, one out of area 29 (shotgun/muzzle.archery only), 300 lbs. and one out of are 30 about 100 lbs.
Very wet and slick in most areas. And after todays rain you can really expect to it to be slippery than snot...........................................

If you go, be careful on all of the roads. In the am it is quite cold and the roads are hard. As soon as it warms up the roads get slick.

Got stuck on one of the hills and had to back up and go straight down the grassy part to get to the road. Doesn't not help I have a beast of a truck......................

After all that's been going on with BoartracksCA, it might be time to switch my efforts to FHL. I've never been, but if I can get some direction, I'd like to give it a try.
Doesn't sound like CR is doing what's right

Went to FHL yesterday and hunting areas 10/13 and area 25.
10/13 I got on a set of tracks and followed them to a small brush patch
and the hog had been shot and was attacked by coyotes. Nothing left but head and rib cage. Still fresh! Checked all of the spots in that area and nothing more fresh.
Went to area 25 and got on fresh sign again near the river. The tracks were headed to area 27. Looks like they are feeding in the river beds under the oaks and bedding in 27 (which is next door to 25).
You can only hunt one area at a time. When you want to change areas, you need to go back in and request a change. They are only open till 1:30 PM. Hard to do sometimes and kind of a pain in the ................................

Roads were very slick again due to the heavy rains.

If you are interested in working for hogs at FHL, let me know and I will try to
help. I know the Fort pretty well. Hunted there since I was 10 years old.

FYI! Not easy hunt at FHL, but there are pigs around.

hntboar,
I'm sending in my permit today. Hopefully, My son and I will be getting up there several times before June 30. I'm not looking for secret spots, but, can you give me an idea of what to expect and where not to waste my time. We'll probably camp...whats the scoop on that?
First time to FHL.
M
BTW, are most of the roads passable with 4wd?

I have just recently joined this forum and found similar questions from members?

" Not asking for secret spots or where you hunt". And some are not as free with the information. I did read that Boartracks was one to provide this type of info.
I know I would appreicate this type of information.

I am the same way. No secrets here.

I can tell you where I have seen. missed or shot pigs over the past 30 years at FHL.
I could cover every area in FHL, but that might be too much info.

It takes less than 2 weeks to get your voucher. They will email you when they have processed it. Then you can just show up and sign in when you go.

Many problems with hunting FHL:
1. Not always open. You will need to check the website weekly. It is updated every Thursday.
2. You can only change areas between 5:30 am and 1:30 PM.
3. Not all areas will be open.
4. They only let about 30 or hunters in each area.

But overall, when all areas are open, you have about 185,00 acres of hunting land.

When you are ready to go and you have a weekend picked and you know what areas are open, let me know and I will tell you where to go.

Easist Pig areas to hunt are as follows: 2, 3(archery only) 7, 10/13, 24,25,27,29 and 30. 29 and 30 are walk in only for archery/shotgun/archery.

I have shot many pigs out of area 29 before it was walk in only.

The message above was for you. Forgot to add your name.

I also forgot to answer your question about the roads.

When the weather is dry, you can get pretty much go anywhere with a 4x4.

When it rains, it gets very slippery. Staying low is a good idea. What happens is that you are forced off the road when wet and you tend to sink a bit on the sides of of the road. In the rain, stay on the roads as best you can you will be fine.

You will need a good set up mud tires for the roads when they are wet. See my other posting above. I has got stuck last weekend. Not fun!!!

hntboar,
A couple of questions for you:
I have been to the FHL post many times and know a little bit about several areas. However, I can never seem to get there when Area 3 is open. What can you tell me about hunting that area. Have you seen very many varmints (coyote, bobcat, fox)? I also plan to pick up one of the late season, either sex, archery tags this next year. Is Area 3 a fair chance at a doe?
We generally try to avoid the rush into Area 29 or 30, always crowded on the books. It used to be my favorite area(s).
Here is the big question, and you may choose to shy off this one or email me rather than respond out in public. Do the elk areas open up a little for those special tag guys? We only see elk in the impact areas. Are you pursuing one of those elk tags? I would like to join anyone on that hunt, hump meat or carry supplies. I want to learn about the elk hunting, so that when I'm 85 and can get a tag - well, I'd be ready.
Thanks, Dave Heffner

Area 3 was open for the past 2 weeks. During the X-mas break they were open from the 12/27 till 1/4.
If you pick up a tag for a doe, you can go to pretty much any area. Lots of deer down there. We saw about 15 does in areas 10/13 and 25 on Friday.
I saw a nice forkie on Friday as well in 25. It was headed to area 24 next to the river. It had a huge rack.
Now about the elk, I saw a herd of 7 Bulls on Friday about 2 pm in area 25 right next to the impact area. They were in 25 and crossed right in front of me. Last week they had 13 Bull special hunt tags and they filled all of them. One was 460 lbs and was a 7x8 with almost 11 inch base. They were shot in areas 16, 19, 25 and one other area.
So to anwser your question, the elk are in other areas than the impact areas. Put in for the drawing in June and good luck!! Hopefully you will get drawn before you are 85! lol.

Sounds good. After you get your email for your permit, you will need to call 831-386-3310 on Thursdays to get the areas that are open for the upcoming weekend.
Go ahead and contact me on this site and let me know what areas are open and when you are going. If I can meet you down there, I will come down. If not, I can tell you where to do depending on the areas that are open.

Another little rule of thunb to add Hntboar excellent advice. If you see grass growing in the road, think twice about driving down the road. It can get really sticky out there.
