Do any of you wear snake boots when out in the field? I tried a few pairs on but didn’t like them. Also....I read a magazine once that said snake bites can’t penetrate leather. I think it is BS but what do you all think. I would rather watch were I step and not trust leather.

Chiro,

Generally snakes will avoid people. Some exceptions are when you step on it, they are threatened (they have babies) or cornered.

While venomous, there are relatively few times when death occured after a bite. But the report also says, the bite is damn painful.

But again, statistically you have worst odds dying in a traffic accident than a snake bite.

In a man-to-snake encounter the wisest move is to give each other a wide bearth. I have a hunting situation where an Asian viper and two babies passed by my foot. I just froze and as you can see I'm still alive.

My brother has been bitten twice...once by a rattler and once by a copperhead.

It happens, and from being there with my brother I can tell you it doesn't look like much fun. He said it was probably the most painful thing he's ever experienced.

Be careful, keep aware, and tread carefully. An awful lot of folks are bitten trying to kill or "scare" a snake, so best advice there is just go the other way. If he's in camp, kill him or move him...otherwise, leave it be.

Snake boots and chaps probably won't hurt, but as I mentioned before, in this rough country you're as likely to put your hand on one as to step on him.

If I tried to do that, we might both be dead. Never known anyone who survived a viper snake bite.
