CA DFG Retail License Sales

Went to purchase a hunting license for my son today at a Big5. The clerk said I could not purchase a license for him without his drivers' license because he is old enough to require an adult license. They went on to say that the DL is required for the system to establish an electronic identity. However, none of this is mentioned on the DFG's website.

I do know that - on the DFG website, I was not able to purchase licenses for the older son, or the junior son, because the DFG did not maintain record of their junior hunting license numbers. Yet, according to the DFG's website, all I need is their past hunting license.

Is this SOP for the new electronic licensing system?

Same thing happened to me when I took my grandson to buy his license and tags. Look on page 12 of this year's big game, California Hunting Digest: "Applicants who are less than 18 years of age may provide any form of identificantion described above or a guardian's identification (parent or guardian identification listed above.)"

Gave the booklet to my daughter and she took him back the next day and they accepted her drivers license as ID and he came home with his license and tag apps.

I was thinking that next year all they need is our DL and then they could look us up real fast???? IDK I dont like this new system...

Actually next year they should just need your "old" license, because it will have your new "GO ID" # on it.

The clerk didn't know what he/she was doing. All junior hunters can be entered into the system with either a valid Hunter Education Certificate or a previous license (if using a previous out-of-state license, the license must have been issued within the previous two years) and a valid ID. The valid ID can be the driver's license of the parent or guardian of the junior hunter. Obviously, a 12 year old junior hunter is not going to have a driver's license. This is a no-brainer. There is a specific button to push to get this option to come up on the ALS screen. The Big 5 clerk needs more training on the ALS terminal.
