Max points did nothing for me but it was a tough draw with 2 tags.

This is my last year for wasting my money and time on trying to draw a La Panza tag in CA. I have put in for well over 30 years and long before the points system, and never been drawn. Max points this year and nothing. I will not spend another dime in supporting DFG or the points draw system here. I can put in in many states and draw first time. Good bye CA, I will take my money elsewhere...

rooster, I have been putting in and spending my money for over 30 years for this tag and have nothing to show for it. Getting an elk tag in CA is not an easy process, as I posted before there are over 22,000 applicants for 367 tags, you do the math. I have elk just outside where I live that are doing damage to the crops and have several invites to solve the problem, but it is not a matter of just being given permission, it just takes one of those 6 tags...

maybe they will end up splitting the La Panza zone up. I think it would be a good idea. I think they figure the number of tags based on the herd size in the southern portion. They could probably give just as many tags in the northern area. It would all be private but at least give those with access a much better chance at drawing the tag.

I had a buddy draw the La Panza period 2 bull tag Nov. 9 to Dec. 1. Does anyone know what kind of a bull he can expect? He knows nothing about it nor do I. Also if anyone has any private land that he could get on or pay a trespass fee that would be helpful. Thanks.

There are far more elk in this zone than DFG lets on, most of the big ranches have problems with the herds eating their crops and busting fences, if fact I have open invites from several, all it takes is one of the 6 tags...

At that time of the year the bulls are beat up and have broken tines, the rut is long over, they don't respond to calls that well and they are very spread out. Getting permission to hunt on private ranches is very hard to get but you might be able to pay a trespass fee, although it may not be where the bulls are...

Isn't it only 7 bucks a year to apply? I'm guessing you're going to buy a license every year anyway, out of state is way more expensive, isn't it?

Whereabouts do you live? I was born and raised in Atascadero and have friends in the California valley on bitter water road. I only moved north a couple years ago.

I apply in several states, you would think being a res in cali would be cheaper than some other states...... not always the case.

Which states? What are the fees? I apply for az, nv, and ut every year they are all more expensive than ca I think. I might apply to some of the states you're applying.

Sorry, I should have said as long as you don't draw in other states. But if you are just grabbing points and a non-res license it's less. It also depends on what you apply for here in ca, Every year I spend around $180 here at home on license, 2 deer tags, bear tag, and a few bucks towards the raffles. Utah is one of the least expensive. Their non-res license $65 every other year and $10 a point per species. I know you already know that. We spend more on a hunting license here in cali in 2 years than we would as a non-res in Ut.

Yah true with the second deer tag and the bear tag the fees do go up quick but I only get one deer tag and no bear tag anyway. My point is really only that your going to buy a ca license and deer tag anyway might as well donate the 7 bucks for a chance at a ca elk tag. Just my .02 cents not trying to tell anyone what to do with their paycheck.

Yes it only 7bucks per tag per year, but combined with my waterfowl res fees, it all adds up especially if you never draw. I have been putting in for this and other elk tags for over 30 years and never drawn a single tag. Like I said it a matter of numbers, 367 total tags with over 22,000 folk putting...I live right where the elk are in this zone and like I have said before it only takes one of those 6 tags. I put in for tags in other states and sure I don't get drawn every year and it cost more, but my odds of drawing is much higher, like every other year or two. Not to mention the numbers of quality elk is way higher and the hunting much better. I used to hunt "every year" in eastern Oregon, until they doubled all the fees. The same thing is going on with the mule deer hunting, here in CA they have made or are going to make most zones a draw and as we all see the fees continue to go up. I used to bow hunt every zone I wanted with my AO tags, now every good zone is a draw and takes points. And the longest I ever waited for OR elk tags was three years, sometimes I would draw the same tag each year. And to answer moonshine, it is not just the costs here in CA, it is that there are so few good tags and those tags take a min of 3points and in the case of elk I have max points. Also, it is not a matter of finding a good spot to hunt elk, I get offers from land owners having serious damage done all the time, it is that there are too few tags.
