CA elk hunting

I might be mistaken, but I thought all of CA was lottery only? I’ve seen a few posts on here about guys considering picking up a tag and going out. Is there areas in CA you can just go buy a tag and hunt? I can’t find my DFG regs booklet and it’s too late to go pick one up. I’m just too curious. I’ve been so bummed out about not getting drawn, I would love the chance to go get a tag and hunt. When I was looking through the booklet in the spring time I don’t remember seeing any areas that weren’t lottery only. Please forgive my ignorance. I’m in the military and have only been hunting in CA for a year. So I’m finding out new stuff every day.

There are no over-the-counter tags for elk in California... all CA elk tags are either on a draw, or if you're rich (and I've been in the military so I know you're not) you can buy tag at a fundraising auction (think $50,000+ for a Grizzly Island Bull Elk tag).

PLM tags (private land management) they can be purchased. DFG has a list of PLM lands. I know the going rate for a tule elk tag starts around $12,000

F.H.L gives out matching #'s of tags half civilian & military/D.O.D. Better chance than the general public! Worth a try. Thanks for youre service. Oh yah good hunting!

Definitely apply for the Tule hunts at Fort Hunter Liggett, half of all the tags are reserved for military personell.
