CA Elk Tags for 2008

Hey Joe, thanks for doing all you do for our Cal. elk. This may be a stupid question, but I know others also would like to know.You mentioned there were almost 26 thousand apps. last year for elk. There are also about 60 different elk hunts. Exactly how do you guys do the actual drawing? Do you hand pick them or is it something that is done on your computers? That's allot of applications to divide up. Not including the antelope, sheep and deer apps. I just mailed my apps. in today. Does that mean my apps. will be on the bottom of the pile. I think there's allot of us hunters that would like to know how the process works. Thanks again for all your help. HUNTNFOOL13

How is the Non-resident draw conducted for elk? Are all NRs put into a bucket and then then randomly drawn regardless of points or are only the max point holders for elk considered?

Not the guy you asked, but the preference draw is done first. Everyone gets a random # between 0 and 1 generated. Numbers are pulled starting with the lowest. If your hunt choice is not filled when your # is pulled, you get it. (unless your party mate puts you above the quota (why would you do a party on small quota hunts?)). Once the first nonresident gets a tag, the rest are done. Obviously, being in the top pool is critical especially for a nonresident, at the preference tags are issued first. They also take a few alternates in case somebody does not get the $$$ in on time.

This may partially explain how the draw is done, this is from out big game booklet.

• After the application deadline, when all applicant information has been entered, the computer assigns each person (or party) a unique random number.
• Just prior to the drawing, the computer sorts all applications according to first tag choice, preference point totals, and random number.
• The computer begins awarding first tag choices to applicants with the most preference
points, in random order (starting with lowest number), until all applications have been processed.
• After the preference point round is completed, unsuccessful applications are resorted by random number (starting with the lowest number), and the computer begins awarding tags based on applicant’s first-choice without consideration of accumulated
points, until all draw-by-choice quotas fill or all applications have been processed.

Basically it goes like this every application is entered into the computer, then all apps are assigned a random number. For max point applicatns -from lowest to highest random number- it goes through them and if your choice is not filled you get the tag. Party applications for elk and antelope will be split if there is only one tag left and you applied as a party, the party leader will get the tag. Deer does not split the applications (I believe). Non-residents are treated like everyone else. If one gets a good number then they will get the tag and the rest of the non-residents will not be eligable because the one alotted tag has been drawn.
