I got lucky last year.  First Period Cow hunt on Fort  Hunter Liggett.  Then I got unlucky when Base Comander canelled hunts.  I was bummed, but more pissed because of what happened (9/11).

Then, I got  a call from DFG(MR. Fischer, he runs Elk program in CA) saying that he might be able to get me the hunt back if I wrote the Comission a letter.  My hunting partner and I wrote the letter, and they say they will re-issue the tags to us this year.  Confiration will be when they vote on it this week.

So, if all goes well, I will get to do an Elk hunt here in CA.  Not a Bull, but a hunt at least.

Are you applying for a tag this year?  I guess now is the time to start since they are starting the point system.

Hey jesse. I wanted to ask you about this. I have My stuff ready to go. So I called sacramento today right. Ask them about the fhl deal. She told Me that the tags are not going to be reissued. That all tag holders we're instructed to send them back for a refund. I said I heard thy we're going to give them they're tags this year. She said and in a (snotty) way. SIR this is not true. I Myself seen all the tags come back in. I am the one who over see's that. So trust Me there is going to be a redraw for this year. I said well this is california ya know. First choice means everything. I understand that sir. I called another dfg office. They said I have to call sac. Then I called fresno. They told Me you guys would probably get you're tags. So pick a different area. So have you heard anything new yet?

I'm making my donation.  Putting in for the second period antlerless in Grizzly Island.  This makes six years in a row, with no draw... but what the heck.

wavesfr,  Everyone I've talked to said the tags were going to be re-ssued to us.  The big game apps book also states this, if you look up the FHL hunt.  It was being voted on (which should have happened last week).  I am going to call Mr. Fischer this week to get the info.  From the verbage, in the future, all cancelled hunts will be rescheduled in the current year, if not, you lose it .

Hey jesse . Ya I read the book but it still does'nt give definate answer. Thats why I called them too. I just wondered so I know if it's a waste to apply. I think you guys should get them. It's just the lady told Me they're was going to be a new drawing. Thats why I was asking you. The deer tags don't say that they're proposed to be given to those who drew last year. Not any place that I seen anyways. So again this is why I am asking. can you e-mail Me the phone number to who you we're talking to please. Cause if you guys are getting the tags. I wanna call & raise some stink with that lady. Because she is gonna cause people to screw themselves. Bye that I mean telling people there's a new draw when in fact there is'nt. Thanks

Wavesfr, e-mail sent.

By the way, I talked to John Fischer this morning.  We are going to get the tags re-issued.  He also told me there is no way you can choose FHL because there is no hunt code for FHL on application.  He wants you to call him so that he can straighten ou the misinformation at the DFG offices.  I e-mailed you his number.  Also,  I will post the e-mail they sent out to the successful hunters from last year.  Also, the preference points will be Elk hunting preference points NOT tied into specific hunt areas.  So , you can apply for another area and then still apply points for FHL next year if you are unsuccessful this year in another area.

E-mail from John Fischer.  By the way, John is the person in charge of the Elk hunting program in CA.

To:  2001 Fort Hunter Liggett elk hunt tagholders:

Once again I am sending this to those for whom I have e-mail addresses;
no disrespect is intended if I missed anyone--- feel free to forward
this message to a hunting partner or anyone else who might be affected.

By unanimous vote, today the Fish and Game Commission adopted the 2002
Mammal Hunting Regulations, which included a provision that allows elk
tags for the 2002 Fort Hunter Liggett hunt to be offered to those that
were denied an opportunity to hunt when this hunt was canceled in 2001.

This specific action only affects those that were selected through the
DFG drawing for this hunt (by agreement, half of the 34 tags for this
hunt go to civilians selected through the DFG drawing, the other half go
to military personnel selected through a drawing by Fort Hunter
Liggett).  But I have it on good authority that Fort Hunter Liggett will
follow the Commission's example and offer this year's military tags to
military personnel that were drawn last year.

I anticipate that the 2001 tagholders will be receiving specific
instructions from DFG soon.  In the meantime, here's what you should
do:

1.  Celebrate.  Hope that the 2002 hunt does not need to be canceled.

2.  Buy your 2002-2003 California Hunting License, but for right now,
DO NOT submit an application for an elk tag through our public drawing.
You will note that there is no hunt code for Fort Hunter Liggett in this
year's Big Game Hunting Booklet--- that is because DFG will issue your
tags in a separate manner.  At this point, submitting an application for
an elk tag can only cause great confusion.

3.  Make sure that I have a current mailing address and phone number
for you, and send me your 2002-2003 Hunting License Number, once you get
it.  If and when we need additional information, we will let you know.

4.  If you have questions, or if you do not hear from DFG's License and
Revenue Branch by ~ May 20, you should contact me by telephone at (916)
445-3684.  We still have a few procedural details to work out in
distributing tags for the 2002 FHL Hunt, and our License and Revenue
Branch is pretty busy with some other tasks right now, but I am
confident that we will be able to take care of it.

5.  Your elk tag will cost $286.75 this year, but do not send us the
money until we have contacted you with official instructions.  The 2002
hunt periods for Fort Hunter Liggett will correspond with last year's
hunt periods (i.e. Veterans Day Weekend, Thanksgiving Weekend, and
December Holidays).

If you need additional information, please contact me.  Best wishes for
a safe and memorable hunt this year.  JF

I was putting in  for Owen's Valley elk hunts and then changed over to FHL. Now it looks like I'm back to Owen's Valley, that archery hunt looks interesting too.
