Today was my last day of the season hunting in the CA A zone, near Lick Observatory. I have both deer and Boar tags.

I wore a t-shirt at 6:20 am when I was nestled in my spot. I was not cold.

Why on earth does the DFG put the A zone so early? It's burning hot. The ponds are dry. This is the case even in non-drought years.

This is not deer season.

Great point that I have wondered myself. I hunted over the weekend and just did a bunch of sweating. Never even saw a dear in 2 days (until I was driving home at night and almost ran over a forked horn in the middle of Elk Mountain Road). I'm sure there is method to their madness to maximize every dime. Maybe if they have seasons running concurrently they don't sell as many tags?

Its a trade-off, they have a fairly long season when the bucks are at their most secretive. Success rates are low so hunters can have opportunity to hunt and hunt every year. If they moved the season to later, it would likely start to cover the rut, then the season length would have to be cut and tags might not be available each year as more deer would be taken.

Personally I wouldn't mind a 1 week season at the beginning of the rut :)

Get B, C, D or X zone tags if you want to hunt later in the season imho.

Nate, were you hunting private land near Lick?

Soak your T-shirt.

Wear a wet green towel over your head and under your boonie hat.

Drink a lot of Gatorade.

Could be a lot worse ... you could be in Iraq, Afghanistan or 'Nam.

:)

I've hunted B Zone in 115 degree weather. I agree, a shorter season later in the year would be much more desirable. It's not easy to hunt when nothing is moving until after dark. Definitely one way to keep the success rate down.

Rifle season in PA started first Monday in December, it was only a week but I don't remember many complaints.
