Well, according to the mail I just got from DFG, the price increase for CA hog tags is definitely official!

According to the letter I got:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
Beginning July 1, 2004, Wild Pig Tags will be sold individually for $15.75 each.  Lifetime Licensees who purchase the Additional Big Game Privilege Package will continue to receive five wild pig tags annually.[/b]

I'm a lifetime licensee, so I'm not impacted... but this still ticks me off. The screws have been turned!

Where the hell is all that money going? every year I pay more and more for my Hunting lic. and tags. I don't mind paying more but they have to do something about the amount of public land to hunt. OPEN COE PARK, for starters, they payed a guy to trap pigs in there for the last year. I would have shot them for free.

It would make you sick to see what tags my friend who lives in Alaska gets with his hunting licence. I mean he gets six deer tags and two black bear tags.

I will suggest a letter writing campaign to Arnold and elected representatives.

He rolled back the car registration fees.....

Maybe he will consider not changing the pig tag fees, or change the fee basis to be 5 tags for $15.75, or something, etc etc.

Ensure your letter states that 2003 hunters received 5 tags for $9.20, which is $1.84/tag. If one 2004 tag will be $15.75, that is an 856% price increase per tag (please double-check my math).

Arnold apparently wants to send the message that "things" are not going to be the same. So let's inform him of this Davis legacy and see what he wants to do.

Cheers,

Carl

Sorry, it's still a good deal to me. ask yourself how many hogs you kill a year? 15 bucks ain't gonna kill ya. This state is in bad shape, get used to it.

I would not mind paying the higher prices but every year it seems that we have less and less public land to hunt. And where does the money go? lots of land that is blocked in by private landowners who will not grant access to us to get to it. Would love to see this change but am not holding my breath!!!

Hey guys, I hear ya, but keep in mind that you're preaching to the choir on JHO. It's cool to speak up, but make sure you also speak up where it needs to be heard... in Sacramento!

Don't just email the governor. Send your messages to your reps too. This will accomplish two things. First, it'll make them aware that the constituents aren't happy about this change. Second, it'll let them know that hunters are willing to speak out and make a difference for their sport.

Hunters have traditionally been a silent faction when it comes to political action. It's time (past time, actually) to make some noise.

Use the phone, use snail mail, and use email.

That's what will make a difference.

Question about the pig tags... are they valid July-June like hunting licenses or do they follow the calendar year, Jan-Dec?

Thanks, Backcountry

Backcountry,

They're the same as hunting licenses. July 1- June 30.

The book you may have now, or any book you buy before June 30 will still be the old price.

I'd have to agree with MikeNSoco how many pigs will you harvest in a year. I am all for increasing the fees but I would like to see the money go to improve the hunting as I know all of us would. This weekends Camp Roberts Hunt was a good reminder of how limited public land has become in California.

All of us would....but license and tag fees go up every year, and when was the last time you saw anything get better in the field or get a nice new chunk of land to hunt? DFG bought some land at Carrizo this year, mainly to settle access problems with their elk hunts. Entry is by permit only and is limited to a few days a week and a few months a year. Hardly worth the increase in fees to me if that's what we're going to get in return. Think we're going to get more wardens with the money? I seriously doubt it.

Originally the price of the pig tags was only supposed to be enough to support the costs of a management program. I know the program's costs have gone up that much and I seriously doubt that DFG is even going to see 1/4 of the revenue that the increase is going to generate. It's going to go into the general fund for our elected officials to squander as they see fit.

We need to look at what some of the othere state's DFG's and DNR's do with far less money and demand the same from our elected officials and CADFG.
