How hard is it to actually get a tag, new to this big game stuff. Is it like powerball odds or is it more like flip a coin odds?

Lets just say 3500 apps and 1 tag do the math. But max point apps get first dibs, it will take you many many years, i got 7 Elk points this year dont know the odds i have ? good luck.

The odds are zero if you don't apply. The idea is to build preference points...it can take a few years. If you've got a military affiliation, its somewhat easier to get a tag at FHL.

Last year, there were 350 tags and somewhere around 20k people put in for them.

Look at it this way, Tule elk are only found in CA and there only around 3800 of them. If you draw a tag and bag one, its something to be proud of.

Thank you very much for this. Very much appreciated. I am very bias to the FHL hunts and I have also been interested to see how the new hunts in Independence turned out. Looks like the Independence hunts were successful. Some interesting things that I see:

- Another new antlerless hunt in Independence
- FHL Archery only either sex struck out??? 0/5. WOW!!
- FHL ML bull hunt went 100% (Thats the dream hunt)

I definatly plan on applying. What is the worst thing that happens, I get chosen? haha. I am looking forward to the new book coming out and explaining more of it.

What type of affiliation do you need for the FHL stuff?

There are two draws for FHL. One for the state and one for military/DOD. The military hunt is a bit easier to draw for because of all the deployments right now, if you qualify http://www.liggett.army.mil/pdf/fish&huntPDF/Hunt&Fish%20point%20system%20poster%20V1.1.pdf

2. -U.S. DOD APF/NAF civilian employees (includes AAFES) and Coast Guard civilians and retired DOD and Coast Guard civilians and their Family members (7 Points)

If you apply for the civilian hunts, 7-10 years wait. Talk to a guy last year that had waited 10 years for a cow hunt.

The military hunts GOTTA be less time than that!

How hard is it to take an elk with a muzzle loader, and how popular is the Muzzle loader hunt. I have a Mossberg 500 muzzle loader and would like to try hunting with it.

Hey DFGELK,

Do you know when the proposed quotas will be approved and posted? It normally has been before the deadline. Now we don't have to depend on the mail, so waiting for information like that before deciding makes more sense.
