The ocassional rabbit that suddenly dies in my backyard is always loaded with fleas. I still always dress them out and they are still tasty but the fleas are not appetizing!

  Man OH Man, It sounds like Baldy Mesa is toast for the opener. I'm not to sure, but since the 15 fwy was closed and now the 138 is closed, I am assuming its all burning. Anyone been up there lately?

Before the fire started in Cajon Pass again yesterday, I had gone up to look around. For the most part the West side of the 15 did not burn in the first fire. All the area East of the 15 and North of 138 had burned well back towards Silverwood Lake. It also had burned well up into Cleghorn Ridge and about a mile South of the truck scales along the 15. Nothing west of the 15 had burned in the first fire except a small area at the summit where the fire had crossed over briefly.

It appears the latest fire is burning West of the 15 up through Lone Pine Canyon and crossed over the 138 to the north into the Mormon Rock area. If it pushes further north we will probably loose all of Baldy Mesa area West of the 15, and threaten homes as well in the Oak Hills and Phelan areas. Wrightwood could also be in danger. It could get real bad. Have to see how today goes

The only good news is these fires are clearing out the heavy brush and in a couple of years we will have some good habitat and better hunting areas again. If possible I will be checking it out this weekend. I only live about 20 minutes from that area.

I live in Phelan, and the Baldy Mesa and Phelan havent burned yet. This fire is around the 138 area going more north west side, so I hear. I also hear its about 70% contained.

It wouldnt hurt my feelings if SOME of the Cajon Summit, Oak Hills, Baldy Mesa, Phelan (before the houses) burned. Its getting way to thick, theres LOTS of quail but its getting to thick to hunt them.

I attempted Baldy Mesa this morning, but didn't get out there early enough as it was already getting pretty warm. All I saw was one jack rabbit, but will probably try again this evening or tomorrow.

There were a few small patches along Baldy Mesa road that burned, but nothing real big. For the most part, Baldy Mesa seemed untouched.

I'm sure some of the guys in here can do better than I can, but here we go: First, I with the bunny on his back, start at the bung hole, with a very small & shallow insision. Then cut the skin all the way up to the neck. Then slice from the end of the paws toward the insision that you made before. You may want to make a cut completely around the neck. Next, with a cut & pull method start to pull the skin off, keep in mind you need to have a very sharp knife for this, cut between skin & meat to help remove the parts that don't pull off easily. Most importantly, if you want to keep the pelt, remember to go slow. I hope I have not mislead you & good luck.

Resurrected from the dead!
Anyways...shotgun is fine. Some areas are even shotgun only. #6 for rabbit should be ok.

How do you know were you can use your 22?

It's in the condor zone (Baldy Mesa), so it no-go on leaded bullets.

If you're on BLM land, then its shotgun only too, until you get past around the 15 and 40 area.

I'm assuming if you're still on SBNF land, then it's ok shooting non-leaded 22's? Someone correct me.

I'll correct you;
Those areas are in the SB County Shotgun Only Area and it does indeed look like they are in the No Lead Condor Zone. But that area of the SBNF is only a little part of D11.

That means that you can’t shoot .22 rifles in that anyway, for that you need to go north of hwy 58. And just because you are on BLM land does not mean that it's shotgun only. Most BLM area are okay for rifle but you have to check to make sure. Certain areas of the Stoddard Wells ORVRA are open to shotgun hunting only, during the legal hunting season, no shooting or hunting in the El Mirage ORVRA.
Remember only a small part of SB County is in D11 the lead free Condor Range, and it dose look like Lytle Creek and Baldy Mesa is in the No Lead Condor Range. So I was wrong, but not my much, check out the maps I posted;

Dude, lead free is only for big game and varmints.

upland game birds, rabbit, and tree squirrel are OK to shoot with lead. The reason is the hunter usualy takes it home. They have tried to change the law a few times so far it has been voted down. I even wrote DFG before the vote.

I hunt in the lead free zone in SBNF all the time and have been stopped by the warden when he watched me shoot a rabbit with lead. he asked nothing about what kind of shot I had just checked that I had the plug installed. I would not want to be in the lead free zone with a centerfire rifle and lead bullets. Pretty hard to tell them you are shooting cottontail with a 30-06. I stopped hunting coyote in the lead free zone cuz I can't afford to shoot that lead free garbage but my favorite rabbit stop is in condor country. .

Shotgun only is for los angeles county and that is the only county in CA that is shotgun only.

No rifles south of highway 58 only applies to TARGET SHOOTING. In some special areas like sotddard wells there may be special shotgun only hunting restrictions.

Check with the national forest website for where you want to go to get further info on specific gun laws. Stop into a BLM field office if you want to hunt BLM or call them. There is even a very small section south of 58 where you can target shoot with a rifle according to the lady at the BLM field office in barstow 2 years ago.

Target shooting is not allowed in the majority of national forest lands but legal hunting is allowed in almost all areas of national forest 150 yards from any structure, people, road, trail, etc.

Hope this helps clear it up.

Here’s a thread about the new proposed shotgun only ordnance they are still trying to get a final vote on;
<o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p>
A quote and link from the Barstow BLM web site concerning the SB SGO;
<o:p></o:p>

Please see the overview map for the specific "
shotguns only" area involved. This ordinance is in effect due to scattered homes and recreational users sharing the area.
For a detailed map, call the San Bernardino County Special Districts office at (909) 387-5940 (157 W. 5th Street, 2nd Floor, San Bernardino, CA 92415-0451).
<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

I was always under the impression that the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com
><st1:place w:st=
<st1:placeName w:st="on">San Bernardino</st1:placeName> <st1:placeType w:st="on">County</st1:placeType></st1:place> shotguns only Ordnance was Law. The SBC Fish and Game Commission are currently in the process of changing it, for good or bad I don’t know.

<o:p></o:p>
This is the best San Bernardino Shotgun Only Map I could find on line that is free;
<o:p></o:p>
http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/media...w.Par.78735.File.dat/BFO_shotgunarea_8x11.pdf

I hear that <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placeName w:st="on">Riverside</st1:placeName> <st1:placeType w:st="on">County</st1:placeType></st1:place> has Ordnance that says it's illegal to shot at night. That makes it illegal to spotlight coyotes at night; I can’t find that in writing. <o:p></o:p>

Dude, lead free is only for big game and varmints.

upland game birds, rabbit, and tree squirrel are OK to shoot with lead.

So hunting in SBNF (condor zone) with leaded bullets in a 22 rifle for rabbits is permitted?

OR hunting in SBNF (condor zone) with leaded #8 shots in a shotgun for rabbits is permitted?

Which? or both?
