I have put in countless hours up there for deer and quail and have never seen pigs or sign until last year one of my setters caught a piglet who I think just surprised him so he caught it, since he never chases trash. There was seven other piglets and no mother to be found so I figured somebody shot her.
I had the chance today to take a walk around on the Cache Creek Wildlife Management Area. I went out hoping that maybe I would run into a retarded turkey. I also just wanted to recharge my batteries. I saw turkey tracks and I heard a couple after shoot time. Oh well.
I used one of the entrances on Hwy 20. It is the one that most horse riding hunters use to get into the Wilson Valley area. First time I have used that route. It is a few miles of oak studded hills mostly. Lots of deer sign. Lots of active trails. I bet most of the people that use that entrance, are in such a hurry to get in there the farthest and the fastest that they never even look at this area. I had to laugh. It made me realize that on a different level, the first couple weekends of A zone in Cache Creek is just like hunting a public duck refuge. LOL
I have hunted Cache Creek 6 of the last 11 years. The first time, I saw pig sign. Nothing since till today. THERE BE PIGS HERE!!! Not a lot of them, but there is a small group of them running around, I saw sign of various ages. Some a couple months ago to some a couple days ago. I am guessing that it is about 6 or 7 and they are just moving a lot. They are after the old acorns that are in the ground around oak trees. They are also using the mudholes.
Also saw a good-sized set of cat tracks at one of the mudholes:
Good way to end the day. Really needed that recharge.

I found a very nice 3X3 right there that was a mountain lion kill last October. One of my bird dogs caught a piglet in there last year that was one of eight little ones with no mom in sight.
BigDog,
I've hunted quail and gone hiking in there a few times. Always see a couple does and there is alot of sign around but I've never seen a buck. As for the pigs, the Fish and Game biologist who manages the area hunts ducks in the same blind as me and you are right there are some but very few. There are more on private property. Many mountain lions. He has found numerous cat killed deer around the creek. I usually access from along Hwy 20 where there is a bathroom, map, and trailhead. I get some funny looks from the hikers when I walk through the parking lot with a shotgun and lab! I've thought about deer hunting there for 10 years and just never did it.
