I live in victorville and hear a lot about hunting in the Cajon Pass but have never been there. I did just start hunting in Hesperia this year and found out this weekend (When I was approached by two SB sherrifs on motorcycles while hunting) that it is legal to hunt in hesperia south of the houses all the way to the 138.

Anyways, I would like to try Cajon Pass and was thinking of diving out Baldy Mesa Rd. and then taking the forest Rd (that goes alon the ridge of the mountians) to search for some possible spots. I was just wondering if someone could please help me out with a general idea of where you can legally hunt (knowing that I have to make sure I am on public land).

Thanks for any help.

Pretty much that whole area is open. Make sure you have an adventure pass to park. The National Forest Ranger WILL come by and check. Nice people though. Also just be wary of shooting towards the Freeway. Other than that its good to go all the way down to the 138 and beyond.
http://imaps.dfg.ca.gov/viewers/dfg_properties/app.asp You can use this site and put a public land overlay on it, that should help you out.

Good Luck up there.

Mogadan, thanks for the great information. I have never been to that part of the DFG site before and I am glad you showed it to me (it looks very useful).

-Castone, I'm not sure if you are being serious or sarcastic, but either way you are wrong to post that comment. If you are serious, please see Jesse's response to an earlier topic titled "upland bird posts"

http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/index....howtopic=183473

god forbid I give the name of a 20 mile long road that leads into a few thousand acres worth of forest; that would be tragic!

if you are being sarcastic, then I am sorry I am not being specific enough for you, but as I said earlier I haven't even been there yet. I was just doing my usual internet map browsing on google earth and saw that Baldy Rd led into what looked like a possible place for birds, so I don't even know the specifics yet.

Anyways, if I make it out there in the next couple of weeks I will post how my experience goes.

Thanks again Mogadan.

Hey, No worries. I could pinpoint a specific area for you but I have had very little success. I have seen birds up there, however. All the way from Lost Lake to the foothills at the top leading to Phelan. I think if you are on Baldy Mesa, you should be on the right track.

I drove around the pass today on my way from school and to work. The brush is really dense there, but some places that look really good to hunt. I also saw a roadkill rattler; scary since I haven't taken my dog to the avoidance program yet. Are those guy going into hibernation soon?

Mogadan- where can I get the public land overlay you were talking about? Is that one of the filter options on the website you referenced?

There might be rattlers in the bottom of the pass, around the train tracks etc... but in 25 years Ive never seen nor heard a rattler anywhere on the high ground of Cajon Pass.

I thought that the city of Hesperia annexed most of the land from Summit Valley road to the 138. There are some city signs posted along Summit Valley by the old dump. If that is true, isn't it illegal to discharge a firearm (as well as hunt) that area? I used to hunt that area as a kid and some years were pretty good others not so much. I have been wanting to check it out again but don't want a ticket.

I drove by the dump the other day and the only signs I waw were "road closed" signs. Just like all other hunting spots it is next to impossible to find out exaclty where you can legally hunt, but since I got the okay from the sherrif, I'm gonna go with it.

There aren't any birds there at all.........
<

It's thick in spots but you can find birds. I wouldn't hunt without a dog in that thick stuff.
Been hunting up there for about 4 years now and haven't seen a snake yet.........my dog had the class her first 2 years and I don't know if she's encountered a snake or not.

Hey Guys, from the above link you should see a map that you can manipulate. One of the features you can see is blm city limits topo, watershed etc. Every time you check one of the boxes you will need to refresh and it should overlay for you . Sorry for the delay getting back . BEEN OUT HUNTIN.

Having said that, I was in the pass today. For 9 hours. What a bummer too. Great temp. moisture in the air. Not a bird to be found.
We climbed through all kinds of thick stuff. Nothing.
In fact I think I lost a 1/4" off my boot sole.
Then we got soaked when the rain rolled through.

I want to go hunting BAD tomorrow but all my hunting buddies flaked out for tomorrow so I was wondering if anyone is interested in going tomorrow. I we can go to my usual spot (saw about 10 birds last week) or I will travel somewhere to you. I live in victorville and will go anywhere in the desert or in san bernardino, the cajon pass, antelope valley, etc. I know it is late notice, but I really do not feel comfortable going by myself with just me and my dog. Please let me know.

JTBean, I know what you mean about huntin alone, Ive hunted alone before it with my dog(s) but since I dont have 4 wheel drive on my Tundra, Im always afraid of getting stuck so I play its safe as to where I go. If you want a hunting partner next saturday 11/8 let me know and maybe we can hook up. Hope you got into birds today.

Too bad I didn't see this in time. I was up there yesterday with a friend. Next time you plan on heading out, hit me up via email. I know a few good spots in the area. Peace.

perdizgunner, thanks for the invite, but I work every Saturday so Sunday is usually the only day I have to hunt.

Skyler, thanks for the invite! I will definately take you up on that this season as there are quite a few times throughout the year when all my buddies are busy.

I didn't make it out because I didn't have a partner, but I am going to try my luck at duck hunting for the first time ever on this wednesday at SJ. Happy Hunting!

Hey all,
There are plenty of easy areas to hunt off the 138 south of the Rail Road tracks. Don't be afraid to hunt near the homes. There are no special regulations except for staying about 200 yards from a dwelling. I have found quail every year and have not hunted in any thick stuff. Hint the quail do stay near the homes with cattle!!! Cause there is drinking water all year long.

Might be going up there Wednesday, near some special spots. Might also check out the Chuckar near Stoddard well and Goat springs if anyone is interested.

adam, I plan on going to SJ for duck but I will be in the sweatline. If I don't get drawn or if I am bored by about 8 then I will be heading back towards the high desert ready for some hunting. Do you hunt with a dog? Do you hunt by yourself? I have a 2 year old weim that hunts close, but not fully trained. If you want shoot me an email with your # and I will call you on my way back from SJ to see about meeting up.

I am looking for some new places to hunt. I do a lot of hunting in Paso Robles and the Santa Maria area. I will be in Valencia this Saturday and was wondering about your statement of hunting off the 138 HWY south of the railroad tracks. If you wouldn't mind sending me a PM is that area (south of the railroad tracks) comming in to the 138 off the 14 from Lancaster/Palmdale? Not looking for your sweet spot just a general area. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

MJ

JTBEAN,
My buddy Uplandbirdhunter and i are going to do quail early in the moring around Cleghorn area and then are taking off to look for the chuckar. He has a springer spaniel that is in her 3rd season for quail and chucks. I tried to email you but the site wouldn't let me. Contact me at my email adambasser@yahoo.com for contact info. You are more than welcome to look for the chucks with us when you get back in town.

MJ,
I was talking areas actually east of the 15 freeway by cleghorn Mtn. There are some home south of the train tracks that have held quail for many years do to the cattle around there. For more info also send me an email.

Adam,

How did you do for quail and chuckar yesterday? I went out after duck huntig but didn't find anything. I drove up lone pine canyon rd. but didn't see any places where the brush was not too thick to walk through. So then I tried north of 15 aroud that last bend before the freeway makes it over the mountain. Then I went to a usual spot near Hesperia where I usually see a few quail. I saw and hear zip! Oh well it was a great full day of hunting and I did get a few ducks.
