I'll be up in the Cajon area saturday and maybe then heading over to arrowhead (or vice versa haven't decided yet). Never hunted the Cajon area so I figure on doing a lot of driving/ exploring.

That's what I'm planning on doing. Just exploring and maybe finding a spot or two to walk around and check things out....

If you are in the mood for a climb. Go over the hill to the north of the power lines, That will put you on a small mesa with some cover. The backside of that , there is a creekbed. It may have some water in it now, not sure. It may be REALLY windy in the pass tomorrow. I am in devore , at the base and its howlin here.
But to brighten the spirits, I have heard and seen tracks in the upper part of the pass. Good Luck, if my kern trip dosent pan out, Thats where i will be,

Hunted up there last Sunday.........Found birds in all three of my usual spots. We did not shoot anything. NOT a lot of birds though and in very thick cover. I will not be going there again this year. I got 5 and my son got 2 on opening day. There is a huge improvement in the amount of birds from last year but still not many............compared to what is usually there.

Let's not hit it too hard or next year will suck as well.

JtBean,
I got your email, but not until yesterday morning. Did you get my reply? We did decent finding some quail in some of our cleghorn areas, but due to the smaller sized covey's we left to search the dessert for chucks. We had no luck finding the chucks. We checked out Stoddard Well and Goat Springs and Taylor Springs. Taylor Springs looked like it had potential, but we got there around 4 and were too tired to hike anymore. So we left. Here is the pic of some of our quail from around cleghorn, and my buddies dog Bella!

Its Bella's second season out there hunting with us, and she is learning about the valley quail better each time out. Unfortunately for her there hasn't been too many birds for her to locate, being as last season was her first (tought year to learn). She did really well last year in AZ hunting the mearns quail, becuase they tend to stay in one spot longer. She is adjusting to the way the valley quail run from spot to spot. But, she has done good mostly on all of our downed birds. But she is a blast to hunt with, and knows here commands really well. She loves being out there, but she still has a lot to learn, which she will have plenty of time to do. BELLA YOU ARE A BLAST TO HUNT WITH!!! And next season she will have her 4month old GSP sister Roxy out there with her.

adam,

I got your message, and glad to hear you found some birds. I didn't have any luck with the quail but did get a few ducks over at SJWA. Are you going out to ridgecrest this weekend or are you staying somewhere in the pass?

JtBean,
I will be in SD this weekend with my wife on a compromised Romantic Getaway. Wine tasting in Temecula on Saturday and Chargers v KC on Sunday. Then taking the nephew to the Wild Animal Park on Monday. Was hoping to go to Ridgecrest area next friday to hunt for more chucks and some quail.

That is great that Bella is doing so well especially with the this year and last year being so poor on birds. I have heard that the mearns do hold a little better so that is good. I have been thinking with this year being the way it is I might end up taking my pup over to Arizona just to get some more bird time. I want to expose her as much as possible!!! Sounds like you made it past the wine tasting and should be off to the charger game tomorrow. Have fun, go chargers!!!!!

Nothin wrong with a weekend like that. The Charger's did it the hard way!

I've got 4 wheel drive that I can take (as long as the road isn't too narrow) so if you any of y'all want to hook up let me know. Unfortunately I've got 2 dogs but neither of them hunt.
