Centercali,

I've never hunted the area and don't know a lot about it. The DFG holds a special hog hunt in the Chimeneas unit, and I've heard more than a few people talk about hunting the place. Doesn't sound super-productive, but hunting is better than sitting around the house thinking about hunting.

There was some pretty detailed discussion about Carrizo last year I think... you might run a search and see if you can find it. Several other threads as well, although most of them were pretty negative.

Hunt there all the time...
It is huge and is getting a lot of attention as of late because of articles on the www and in periodicals. The pigs are migratory, like most of the big game, and it takes a good bit of luck to see any. They tend to feed and water on the private ranches that have the better habitat and the permanent water sources.
Do a back search here on JHO to dig up posts from those who have posted info.
Good luck, there is a movement afoot to limit all public activity, including grazing and hunting...

I killed a pig above the visitors center about 8 years ago. Walked in rabbit hunting this summer and everthing was bone dry, springs I know of were totally dry. Be careful diving the dirt roads right now there inpassable when wet, lots of clay in the soil. Good luck

Man, it's been awhile since I slid down that slick as snot road. It looks flat but I did two 360s before I could even slow down one day.

WU planted pigs in their two ranch's near Caliente so its possible that some pigs left the WU ranch's and went to other ranch's. Has far has I know there is no public land close to Caliente so you would need to make contact with the private landowners. I would not be surprised if in the near future they work there way north maybe into Natl Forest land by the Kern River we shall see.

By Caliente I meant the town of Caliente which is really just a store. Maybe in a few years a few pigs might start to populate the public land areas.

Makes sense since Teachappi is maybe 30 miles or so S.E. of Caliente. There are already wild pigs in the Teachappi Mtns I have no clue about the Caliente Mtns. Has far has I know there is no public access for hunting in the Teachappis. My bad about misplacing the Mtn ranges.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I just got done hunting the Caliente mountains today. I live about 45 min from carrizo plains and let me tell you that place is very dry and bare. There are a few scattered water holes that are mostly used for cattle. I covered a lot of ground today and couldn't find a single sign any where found a couple speratic tracks that were undecipherable but close to a pig track. Saw one coyote right after sun up and didn't see another animal all day except the Pronghorns north of Hwy 58. There were lots of fresh coyote tracks and rabbits and squirrels. There was a lot of brush out there that would give good cover but that only helps if there are actually pigs in the area which I am not too sure of lol. Needless to say I will probably not be going back unless it is to just get out of the house for a day. Once again just my 2 cents and if you do decide to go Best of luck to you and hope you do better that I did.

I've gotten pigs out of the north section of the Calientes off one of the ranches- I think it was the Bar 6 or something.
I've not seen anything in the southern areas.
