California Adopted Elk Tags

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Fish and Game Commission adopted the mammal regs for this year and there are a few changes for elk.
The following Junior elk hunts were authorized
2 tags for Marble Mountain hunt - either sex
2 tags for Northeastern Hunt - either sex
1 bull tag La Panza period 1
1 antlerless tag Grizzly Island Period 1
1 spike tag Grizzly Island Period 1
1 spike tag Grizzly Island Period 2
1 antlerless tag Fort Hunter Liggett period 1
2 bulls tags Fort Hunter Liggett period 3

All the corresponding general hunts to these tags were reduced by the number of junior tags. The northeastern hunt tags will come out of the archery tags. Due to our environmental document we could not increase total number of tags this year.

Also, the Independence hunt quota was set at 0 for this year. This was a regional recommendation and will be re-evaluated in the future.

I was waiting for this info. Quick question: My 12 yr old will apply with me for X9C using his first deer tag and apply for J12 using his second deer tag. Will he earn a bonus point if he doesn't draw the Jr. hunt?

I believe if he draws either hunt he will lose his bonus points, if he does not draw either hunt he will earn a bonus point. But this is all done by our License and Revenue Branch, so don't kill me if I am wrong.

Maybe it depends on the order of the draw (Jr hunts first)? License and Revenue Branch said he would get a point, but I'm still not sure they understood my question. Seems like only one hunt could be considered his first choice. Remember to wear orange out there.

My understanding is the points are only lost or gained on the first choice. If you draw on a second choice you still get a point. And like DFGELK, I am not positive on that, just my understanding.

I think I read it wrong too. If first tag the X is applied for a point will be earned if he fails to draw. Points don't come or go on a second tag

It would work that way if it was a second choice, but I believe Juniors can put in for a junior draw with a second tag. I am not a hundred percent positive because I do not work on deer info, just elk and antelope (which I have all individuals named). But if he draws his first choice on his first tag or a junior tag on his second tag he should not be eligable for a point. The whole tag and choice thing gets confusing. Luckily I never get drawn and always earn a point, so it keeps it simple for me.

I couldn't help noticing theres no junior hunts in the Owens Valley.

Were the ranchers fearing the loss of too many cattle?

At this time we did not feel Owens Valley was the best place for a junior hunter. The tag quotas will be looked at and most likely adjusted for next year. This year for junior hunters was a test run, you may very well see junior hunters next year in Owens Valley. Next year we redo the environmental document and this will allow us the flexibility we need to adjust tag numbers and/or seasons.

i wonder if they will ever do anything for the seniors.
my dad is 71 yrs. would be nice to see him get a
chance at a special draw . at a hunt of a life time
before he can't hunt any longer. my son already
has had his j-12 4yrs ago. now i would like to see
dad get 1. i put him in for g-3 thats where he says
he wants to hunt but end up with d-7.
he has had knee replacement other than that he's
in good shape

Maybe if the DFG increases the cost of the tag so they can pay for blaze orange paint - go around and paint "C-O-W" on all their stock.

Good thing I haven't sent my elk apps. off yet, this is goin to take some rethinking.
