People who do go hunting on these days will;
#1. Not take a hunter saftey course.
#2. Not be properly licensed.
#3. Shoot deer w/o tags.
#4. Shoot waterfowl/upland game w/o stamps.
#5. Shoot animals out of season.
#6. Many violators will say "no espeaka englais" when confronted. Then they get a slap on the wrist and sent on their way.
Too many problems! I think this was designed my some moron.
PLUS - Why would the Sierra Club promote this? That alone is suspect.
From what I've read of this the only thing it changes is that you don't need a basic hunting license on those two days. You're supposed to buy whatever stamps or tags that are necesary for whatever you're going after and you're supposed to take the hunter's safety course before you go out, So, I'm not seeing much sense in this anyway. And, like others hae said, I'm seeing potential for a lot of problems.
Perhaps they're trying to get a "Turkey-shoot" day for the wardens to write a bunch of tickets when they catch all these folks without tags and stamps etc.?
Caninelaw - I think you are onto something. The amount of confusion with this "special" free days will be profuse for those who are not informed fully. You guys know that we even get confused with the regulations occasionally, not to mention the problems "newbies" will have. There maybe "DUI like" checkpoints during these hunt days to check people, but I doubt it.
According to the DFG they dont even have enough wardens to staff the entire state and they are underpaid, so what will change? You will only have a bunch of idiots running around shooting whatever they want.
This is like telling people they can drive for a couple of days even though they don't have a license. Unfortunately, they probably wouldn't have the required training or experience.
who is going to spend money for a class on hunter safety when you dont need a license? Plus when I took the class here in Cal. I had to sign up in advance to even get in.
Script for "free hunt days;"
Person A: "hey cuz, look! Free hunting days! We can go get some meat and shoot stuff for free!
Person B: No way cuz! Thats BS!
P-A: NO, its for real, man! See, look at this flyer; "FREE HUNTING DAYS" Oct. xx-xx in all of California."
P-B: Wow! You mean, we dont need no stinking license? What can we shoot?
P-A: I guess what ever we want. Its says it's free.
P-B: All right! I only got a pistol can we use that?
P-A: Why not? It's for free man, no rules! We're gonna hunt for free!!!!
Just the facts:
1. Two free days: one in the fall and one in the winter.
2. Free hunters (no license required) MUST be accompanied by legal hunter.
3. Free hunters must follow all rules except no license. Must not have held prior hunting license.
4. (I couldn't summarize this one.)
"Authorizes DFG to require an unlicensed hunter to demonstrate the safe operation of the firearm prior to being authorized to hunt on a free hunt day. Persons authorized to evaluate whether the person has demonstrated safe operation of the firearm include any person who has held a hunting license for he last 3 years, a licensed firearms dealer or dealer's employee, or a hunter education instructor. Authorizes DFG to prohibit unlicensed hunters from taking species that require a draw or lottery to obtain a tag or require a federal stamp.
5. Because there are two free fishing days - we must have two free hunting days."
6. Free hunters MUST complete on-line safety course.
Comment section:
"Although this bill allows DFG to require an unlicensed hunter to demonstrate the safe operation of the firearm they intend to use prior to being authorized to hunt on a free hunt day, any licensed hunter who as been licensed for the last three years, or any licensed firearms dealer or employee, would be authorized to evaluate whether the unlicensed person has demonstrated safe operation of he firearm, and to provide an affidavit to DFG to that effect."
This should be enough to keep the discussion going.
That is enough to squash the discussion. It is a dumb idea that is going to cause people to unknowingly break the law. It would work if hunting did not have so many stupid rules, regulations, stamps, tags, etc. They should have had a free "shoot a lion, or a coyote, or a crow, or a pigeon, or even a limit of doves day". That would have been a home run. This is a joke.
So, they plan to change the requirements for purchasing a tag? Don't you have to have a license before purchasing a tag? Or is the plan to have special 1-day tags (actually, considering the rest of the ideas this one makes the most sense for it)?
