A couple days ago I went out to make a couple stands for coyotes in the evening. I arrived to my spot off highway 138 near Quail Lake and could barely open my truck door due to the 30+ mph winds. I figured I'd give it a try anyway, but the coyotes didn't want to come out of wherever they were hiding from the wind. Walking to my second stand, I came across this sow and her baby. I was downwind, and they fed toward me until they were about 20 yards away. Then I turned on my Foxpro to see how they would react to coyote howls. The stopped in their tracks, and then curiously approached me. As soon as they hit my downwind side, they spun around and took off in the distance. Despite not seeing any coyotes, it was a cool day in the field with a fun pig encounter.

I did have a pig tag in my pocket and my .223 could make an easy head shot at that distance, but I wanted to continue my coyote hunt instead of drag out this sow.

Too late!

I'm having a hard time understanding how anyone gives up a 20 yard shot on a pig , WITH a tag in pocket - to wait for a yote instead? I don't know whether to hate you or respect your level of restraint. LOL

Not worried about that, unless they're trespassing :toothless:

I don't like the idea of shooting a sow with a piglet. And I'm holding off for something a little bigger to go after with my bow.

It's an odd thing watching em come to a call, experienced that recently with javelina. Pretty cool. Might be the ticket for getting em into bow range.

I have always wanted to try a call but I am scared of blowing one of the 5-6 shots a year I get. FYI- that was not a dependant piglet. It is almost as big as mama. You should have shot.

Another reason not to list your spot is it in unlikely to be ONLY your spot. Like Jackman said, there will be 100 rookies and knuckle-heads up there every time you go now. good work...

:bag-on-head: It's illegal to take big game in California with the aid of an electronic call (mouth calls are okay). Just sayin'.....:stir pot:

Cool. Good job on following the law and knowing it in the first place. Better luck next time with the yotes.

lol that cali thinks pig is big game... we need to make a trip to tx and shot 20 or 30 hogs for free. A bunch of us could have lots of meat. Than cut the tail and the state of Tx will pay $2 for each. Not much money but a long far cry away from 500-1200 dollar hunts we have out here. seems almost sad to me that cali is so dumb. Oh I forgot. cali likes to make money... not give it away :panic::smiley_doh:

Hmmm, my most favorite spot in D11 is right near quail lake. And there are these really dense brushy folds and draws on the north slopes where porky can hide when it's hot.

Guess I gotta keep an eye out for tracks next time I'm up there and expand my range a bit...
