calling all hogs!

I have two hog calls by Primos one is a pig in distress call and one is a hog grunter. I alternate about every 10 to 15 minutes. Is that to much calling? Has anybody called in hogs with traditional preador calls? In Cal we can't use electronic calls. has any one had sucess with attractor scents? In Cal we can't use bait.

I have had equal lack of success with both kinds of calls. I’ve snuck in close to only have the hogs blow out of the area as soon as I tried the call. Hog calls are one piece of equipment I will never carry again. I have never tried scents to attract hogs. Good luck

I guess you won't be the poster boy for the calling industry! Interesting that you actually saw the hogs split when you called them.I was calling pretty steady for 3 hours and a hog got within 30 yards of me but he didn't seem interested in seeking out the source of the calls.

The only thing the 'hog in distress" call is going to get you is probably a mountain lion. So I would be damn carefull using that call. Second, I have never heard of calls working on hogs. The only thing close enough in calling a hog is using a pair of tusks to stimulate a hog fight. That has stop some hogs in there tracks before (I have only seen it once).

The only thing I ever saw a hog call do is send them busting the other direction. I have yet to hear success stories.

However, I did try a buck grunt on a big boar in South Carolina, and it looked like he might have turned slightly in my direction... just before my ride showed up to take me back to camp.

Interesting that I have had two hunters actually seen pigs running away from the sound of hog callers. It would be interesting to expriment with coyote calls since pigs will eat wounded critters. Keep the replies coming!

I've used hog distress and yote call together and have had good success in bringing in a yote or two. A not so fresh hog skin near you is also a good way to help bring them in and it will also hide your sent. Just make sure to check the wind direction.

For hogs I've heard the grunt used to hide your walking noise works (short soft grunts), but you could have a boar that is curious what the “H” is going on in his turf. While hunting I have hear a distress pig call and grunts, upon my investigation a lone mature boar has found a pig/heard of pigs in his domain and is trying to romance the ladies.

I actually bought a hog caller but never got to use it since it sounded like a pig squeal after being shot. My last hunt confirmed this. The rest of the family bolted too after hearing the squeal.

The primos hog grunter is basically a deer grunt tube and more closely resemble a distress call than anything. I bought one and tried it at night so I never actually saw the pig run away but you could hear them run away. It was a pretty consistent running.

I was going to post another negative result of blowing a pig call, but the previous posts speak volumes.
It really calls in coyotes if you sound like a young porker caught in a fence...

Great Post Nic. By the way does Hawaii have both Polynesian and European pigs? I guess I'll discontinue the Primos grunter although maybe still try the pig distress call it would be fun to call in a coyote. I guess pig calling isn't all its cracked up to be. There are other brands besides Primos if anybody has had sucess with that brand please share it. Easymoney do you belong to WU? I have hunted pigs near Coalinga Ihaven't yet made it further north for pigs.

I have had them come from within hearing distance to where I was, blowing a grunt tube, as well as chomping my teeth so sound like hogs eating acorns, this was in South Georgia and I was able to hear them within fifty or so yards, and had heard from those in the know that hogs, since they are hogs, would come to the sound of another hog eating something good.

that hog squealer is something that baffles me, seems to me it would be like blowing at a deer, but I have seen some crazy stuff so who knows
