Just to let all of you North American Rino "HOGS" hunters know that this will be the last hunt at camp roberts this year until may. We have been getting a good number of hogs out since the rain started. Hunt area's by the river #6 and #7 low water bridge. I have been stationed there since June and help run the DFG hunt program. The last hunt dates are Dec. 27,28,29,30,and 31st. Its $15.00 a day to hunt, and gate 3 will open at 6 am.
GOOD LUCK

Boar Tracks,

First, welcome to JHP! Hope you've come to hang out for a while.

Secondly, is Camp Roberts Active or Retired Personnel only, or is it open to civilians? I can never keep the various camps straight.

Thanks for some good info, anyway.

Thanks for the info Boar Tracks!

I was thinking of heading up to FHL this weekend. Wouldn't mind stopping at Camp Roberts instead if it's open to civilians. Jesse's page says something about military "membership". Other web sites seem to imply it's open to civilians as well.

Also, do you need to register in advance, like FHL, or can you just show up at the gate at 6AM?

Thanks again!

Camp Roberts is open to civilians.

Thanks for the info Boar Tracks, You have me thinking about changing my plans now. I wanted to ask you a few questions you might know the answers to. Is there any cold storage if you take a pig on the post? Thanks.

More info on Camp Roberts at http://www.jesseshuntingpage.com/camp-roberts.html

Doesn't look like any firearm restrictions. You do not have to register ahead of time. You DO have to have all of your firearms inspected and their serial numbers noted. You do have to check in/out of the main gate every day you hunt. Other restrictions similar to FHL.

Kick,

there's several weapon restrictions. Areas 6 & 7 are shotgun only. No .22s on the post for hunting anytime. Big game hunters must wear orange. Is pig considered big game?

Dogs only for watefowl and upland game.

Thanks for the info Jesse. I didn't see any of that on the Camp Roberts web site. They did have a special "Big Game" hunt earlier this year for "Deer, Pigs, and Rabbit". Must be some Texas-sized rabbits out there.

Does it specify anywhere how much orange is enough?

I'll probably pass this time since the particulars are sketchy and the good hunting is in shotgun-only land. All the good spots at FHL seem to be on shotgun/archery only areas as well. Maybe time for a Benelli Super Black Eagle slug-barrel?

Kick,

If you click on the link on the Camp Roberts page you posted, that says "Hunting & Fishing Brochure" there are 3 more pages of info and regs there.

Here's the link

http://www.calguard.ca.gov/cprbts/HuntFishBrochure.htm

The big bummer is no coyote, ground squirrel or bobcat shooting.

Sorry I did not give all of you the full info. The orange thing is not pushed here at all. No camping, No cold storage, sorry. I just got to work at 6:30am and there was 11 hogs going up the hill were I work on post, mates . Just asked the DFG aid,"Samantha" for any help, finding a area. The river looks like a 100 tractors went into it with all the hog sign.If you need any more info you can get me at boartracksca@yahoo.com I will be on my system most of the day.I will be hunting sat. just look for the big red ford truck or ask the gate guard at gate #3 for Lowell and I will glad to show you all around for some hogs, I've killed 27 hogs in 6 weeks so my wife is sick of pork fat now.

GOOD LUCK ALL

Hey all JHP

I will be at the front gate # 3 At 3:35pm today. I have already met a few of you. Hope to see the rest of you. As of today, only 2 hogs shot , but alot were seen. They just could not keep up with them. The river is still the best area to hunt, 6&7 by the impact area. You have to walk the thick sh@# to find the hogs. Also a good place for dusk hunt is the north east corner of area 5 were they come from private prop. onto CR.

GOOD LUCK
Lowell

27 HOGS IN 6 WEEKS[/b]

That's a bit excessive, don't you think. You must have a huge freezer and buy a lot of pig tags. Even if they were piglets and you only got 25 pounds of meat out of each one, that's still 675 pounds of hog meat. What do you do with all that pig meat?

Most of the good hunting areas are just off the hard pan,so theres no problems there. But some of the best spots you have to use a 4x4. Like area 5 and 4. The mud here is like ice when wet, so just be careful. There are two guys here now who hunt out of a car,by the river and everytime they come they score on hogs. Some of the best hunting is by the Game check station, right by the freeway(shotgun only).

On the pig total,I was in Texas for 2 weeks, lots and lots of hogs
<
Here in CA Ive got 8 in four weeks, Plus most all of the hogs I shoot go to Unit BQ's here at camp roberts.
But you have to try TX, You can legaly hunt at night, with a knife, and with night with spot lights, all legal. Wow what a state.

Sorry about that, the game warden here always says the samething"how many did you get?"and starts getting out his little book, until I show him the pic's of Texas.
Anyway, I just called the front game office, and no pigs yet today. But its still early, and I'm going to meet with some JHP hunters at 3:35 to take them out to try to get a hog.
Also, I just talked to a friend who just hunted Big Sandy Wildlife area, and he said he missed a nice hog today.
Big Sandy, I found has pig moving through it, but don't stick around.

Lowell, thanks for putting us on the pigs Monday morning. I wish I could've talked to you Sunday morning. The girl at the check-in station was no help and we drove in circles during the best part of the morning. Unfortunately my son and I didn't get a pig . We did some serious prowling through the woods next to the river but got busted 3 times. Just could'nt see them in all that brush and downed logs untill it was too late. I wish I knew about this place a month earlier. Had to leave Monday at noon. A lot different than spotting them on a hill side. We should have still hunted and waited for them to pass by. Thanks again Lowell. - Mitch

Hey fellas, I managed to get up at 1:00 AM on monday and made it to the gate just before 6:00, truck #2 in line (new white dodge 4x4 in case anyone saw me). Too last minute to get anyone to with me, so I was by myself.
Not having been there before and trying to find my way around in the dark/fog during the best setup time was not good, but by mid morning, when the fog cleared and I discovered I was not where I wanted to be, I hiked back to the truck and moved. I still hunted the river upstream of the "low water" bridge the remainder of the morning and again late afternoon (drove around checking the place out in between), but I did not see a pig.
You sure could could tell there were alot there, but I figuired they were pushed out of the area over the weekend by hunters since the river area is fast to cover and I saw alot of others hunting it.
When I checked out, the girl said I should have tried the other side of the freeway (too late now), but next time I will certainly take a shotgun so I can cover some places I missed.
That place sure is beautiful though! I saw lots of animals, a few deer, bobcat, and this thing that must have been an elk 'cause it looked like the biggest, lankiest, awkward looking doe I ever saw.
Thanks Boar Tracks, I will be planning a return as soon as it reopens, next time with a shotgun and more knowledge of how to hunt that place.
Oh yeah, did I mention how nice a place you got up there?
