I will be here for 12 more long years, And the hunting is great in Aug. Don't forget about the deer hunting here. They take some good bucks out of here. When I find out about the new hunt dates, I will post them for all of you.

PS: On big sandy Wild life area.

Got onto some hogs on the 1st, wife let me out of jail for a few hours.
Found a small group moving down the river,but could not keep up them until they went back onto private land.
Big Sandy is a shotgun or bow only area, open til the end of Jan.

Sorry you did not get into the pigs, I did see your truck mon. I was with another JHP group. And yes you did see ELK we have a nice herd here and I'm trying to get DFG to open a Hunt like FHL. We will see.

I always use the "I'm a just a victim of my superior DEER hunting skills" for being poor at hunting other game.
I'll be ready for them next time!

I and a friend hunted Camp Roberts on Sat, Dec. 28th (the red Jeep Cherokee). We hunted areas 4 and 7 in the morning and 6 in the afternoon. Saw lots of sign in 6, some in 7 and 4, but no pigs. None were taken the entire day. The heavy rain sent us back home at about 3PM.

Lowell, if you were there, I sure missed you.

It's a very beautiful area though. The river was breathtaking.

I met Rick (Westy) and his son Dustin up there Monday night. We hunted Tuesday 1/31/02 with lots of fresh sign on the river in areas 6 & 7 but no hogs spotted. Wednesday we wanted to do an early hunt at Big Sandy but the fog was so thick I could barely see my truck in front of the motel 20 feet way.

The camp is a lot like FHL. Good paved roads with good access to most areas if it rains.

The check in window was like a ray of sunshine compared to FHL. The girl was very pleasant and helpful since I hadn't been there in many moons.

Tuesday there was 2 other groups we saw hog hunting and 1 quail hunter with a dog we heard banging away a little. I must have just missed you BLASTMASTER.

For $15.00 a day it's a decent public land hunt, we switched off to quail in mid day just to see if we could any better there. The weekends may be more crowded from what we heard.

To hunt pig with a 12 ga. do you need to use slugs ???? I'm thinking about buying a Win. 1300... Don't know about putting slugs down it..

I think you would be better off with a moss 500 for the money. You can get slug barrels alot cheaper. Plus some of the new slugs on the market now give great performance to 150 yards plus.

Plus it opens up more areas for you to hunt. Also check out modern muzzle loaders, you can get them cheap, and they work get on hogs.Most shot gun areas let you shoot smoke poles to.

Hey Boar Tracks, i'm thinkingof making the drive up to Big Sandy on the weekend. Does it get crowded? How has it been with this dry weather? I met you in the morning of the 30th at Roberts and you directed my son and I to a good area but unfortunately our shotgun barrels are still sparkling clean.

You get a few , maybe 1 or 2 cars. Its about 850 acres, and you have to park in the lot and walk in. Hunt to the north east side along the river below the landslide on the hill. If I did not have to play army this weekend I would join you. Don,t for get that scottsdale Mtn. is just up the road.

Hey BoarTracks, sorry for all the questions but at Big Sandy what type of terrain is it? Would you bring a pack frame or a gamehauler? I couldn't make it this weekend or next but I'm thinking of going the Saturday before the Super Bowl. Even if I spend the night and hunt the morning, I think I can make it back in time for the game.
