Yes, the secrets out, but you can't fault a man for doing his job.
Plus, because of his efforts, the service folks and familys had a much better picnic this year. I know that there was at least $1800 more in the kitty for the event. Maybe with enough interest, Sarge might have to find limits on the hunters at the base for a given day. Also, he might get some budget $$s to improve what is already there.
I know it sucks lossing a good place, but with the high costs of alternative locations (Tejon) is no fun, but I would rather share with others, than keep to myself. I do draw the line at GPS cordinates

I had to change my user name becuse of some conflict with paying advertisers. Which is funny because except for the website address I would sign my post with, I never pushed anyone to hunt with our group. I actually provided more information to people so that they could ask the right questions when they hire a guide. I originally chose my user name becuase I knew there was likely to be some of my past clients using the forum and I always like hooking up with them to see how there hunts are going. I read the new posts almost daily, but I don't post much anymore because I'm busy. Lately I have read some post and have gotten somewhat tired of the redunant posts and ignorant questions or statements. Some folks have some great questions or information while others are just out there. I am tempted to give an example, but I will refrain.

In all actuallity I have no interest at CROB to protect. I personally have only hunted Camp Roberts twice, even when I worked there, and both were for the deer season. FYI: the ranches I guide on are not ranches that I can hunt on, so I am not trying to protect CROB for myself. In fact there are much better places on public land to hunt pigs than CROB. Some places I've been to can produce a hog almost every time.

As for my tenure at the Camp Roberts in the Env. Office I worked on the kit fox project. I had nothing to do with the hunting program. Had I been involved in the program I would have sure put an end to 200 people weekends. What a joke. Not to mention it wasn't the Env. Office's job to promote hunting on the installation. We were there to conduct surveys and make tag number recommendations. The CDFG is suppose to promote hunting at CROB and throughout the state. I personally don't care if everyone knows about the place, but there should be some cap on the number of hunters, and perferably much less than Hunter Liggett.

"Yeah the secret is out"...
I am a local, and have hunted Camp Bob for many years. It never had the publicity that it does now via the internet. It is getting more crowded and will continue to get more so. And I too, agree that Boartracks has done a great job of promoting Camp Bob.(That is his job and we might have all lost the ability to hunt this base if not for his hard work.) And that is exactly why it has gotten so popular with "out of towners". The same is true of the large number of new hunters on wildlife refuges all over the state. It has gotten crowded, and sometimes safety or courtesy is forgotten in the zeal to be the first inside, first to the "spot", and first to get your shots in.
I am not as concerned with the over all numbers of hunters, as I am with the safety issue of large numbers of hunters along the river using slugs. I usually bowhunt along the river and have seen some things that make me cringe. Fortunately no one has gotten hurt, yet...
We all need to get along and support our limited public resources. As well as being safe and well mannered, we are supposed to be the diplomats of our sport. There are many who would love to take this privilige away from us. So those of you who are quick to condemn, be careful what you wish for.

Hang in there Boartracks... Even though I have never been to CR, I got your back

CR is a military installation, not a place for locals to "claim" as theirs...

Take a good look at Blastmasters photo. A dad and his girl enjoying a great hunt as a family. They might have not heard of CR if I had not post. I'm doing my job that I'm being paid to do, and I'm proud of the out come.
THAT'S RIGHT! and THANK'S! I'm 5 hours away, and taking my kids to CR was all because of you, and Jesse's site. You both are well appreciated!

In response to your posts Boaring. Hunting as a sport is in trouble. There are less and less people buying licenses every year. And one of the major reasons is because of the lack of places to hunt.
So, Boar Tracks Ca is not only doing his job, he is probably keeping some people in the "family" by letting them know of somewhere they can try for pigs at a reasonable price.
Seems to me that the base is run by people who are firearms smart. So, I would expect them to know when the numbers are too high and set a limit on hunters allowed in.

This is in response to Boaring

If you do not care about C/R and claim that there are better spots to hunt on public land
<
Why the long winded BIO on yourself? Last time I checked no one hunted Kit foxes anyway!

The more I read BOARING'S post and some of the comments he made the more it rubbed me the wrong way. If he finds some of the posts here "boring or redundant" why comment at all on anything? I have been reading many posts in this forum and have yet to find anyone who is asking a stupid question. Everyone here is there to help for any type of advice. As NATHEN pointed out I think other motives on BOARINGS part are at work. It sure is not helping to build camraderie with fellow JHO'RS. BOARTRACKS I salute you on your part in keeping the hunting tradition alive and allowing famlies the chance to experience are great hunting tradition and pass it down to the next generation, thats what its all about anyway isn't it? NUFF SAID!!!

just trying to understand this whole deal....
Steve

To Boaring: Wow dude! No one needed that! Keep it to yourself.don't make other's upset because your business has gone bad!" be kind to others, and they will hunt with you" or maybe not!

Boaring feel free to cough up the public areas that are more productive and that way we can reduce the hunters at CR. BOARTRACKS thanks for putting up with all the frustrations the past few weeks you do an outstanding job and Blasters Pic says it all.

Everyone seems a little sensitive. You realize that this is a place for opinions also, right. I wasn't trying to be a jerk in my post, but just putting out there my opinion of what is occuring at CROB.

And to cahogwild buisness hasn't gone bad at all. More and more people are wanting to hunt wild pigs than ever before and many are using guide services in California. Booking hunts are not a problem now or in the past.

Reddog,

It's definitely closed this weekend, due to troops training. Last weekend there were only three areas open, but since there were hardly any hunters there it wasn't a big deal (except what I think are the "prime" areas were closed). They're supposed to re-open all zones next weekend, but you should still call to confirm.

Good luck!

You are entitled to your opinion in this forum BOARING, just like everyone else, but leave out the slights you put in one of your posts refering to, as you see some as redundant and ignorant. Not going to make many friends when you add things like that. Not being sensitive at all just calling it as I see it! As for C/R I have not hunted there yet but even with a line for check in it seems to be the best place around right now for hunting pigs. Everyone who has hunted there the last couple of weeks seems to have had a great time and has had no problems during there hunt.

What do you have to do to hunt CR? I heard you have to be in the Military to hunt there. Is this true?

No, but they are closed for a few months. You can check out the info about CR in the hog hunting links section.

Back in 1988, Camp Roberts used to be open every weekend. No limits to number
of hunters and no assigned areas. I wore out my brand new '88 Mazda pick-up going to CR every weekend (I live in L.A.) for a year & a half. The place was hunted out since it was being hunted every weekend. Not many hunters though due to the poor success ratio. I never saw any pig all that time. That soured me on CR and I never went back to this day(15 years). Due to the very limited time that CR is now open, the pig numbers have bounced back. I would never have found out about this improvement if not for this JHO. I also give special thanks to BoarTracks for his efforts in keeping the CR hunting program invigorated & sustainable. I am just lucky to have a ranch owner friend in Texas & the interest generated by articles in the California Hog Hunter Quarterly, otherwise I would have given up big game hunting altogether because of poor hunting opportunities.
This is the crux of the survival of the hunting sport. "HUNTING OPPORTUNITIES". Without this, hunting will just exist in the history books and we will be legislated out of existence faster than we expect. So whatever way we can stimulate & make available the hunting experience is the only way to interest & recruit newcomers. BoarTracks you deserve our heartfelt thanks. As long as it is not open every weekend, there will be a huntable herd in CR. Only thing needed is to assign hunters to designated areas just like FHL for safety reasons. I might even re-visit CR one of this open weekend. BIG, BIG thanks to JHO & BoarTracks!!!!!
