I was at CR this past weekend with two of my cousins and had a good time. We saw some fresh pig tracks in area 1 and 3. We didnt see pig though. We shot too ducks,3 rabbits, too doves, and 18 quail all together. All by the river in area 4 and 7. We hunted the river pretty hard. I was driving a green jeep cherokee. Does anyone know if pigs use the same trails day in and day out. Or do they mainly just rome around answer would be appreciated. thanks in advance. Merry Cristmas

Reddog,
I might try to make it out to Camp Roberts this Saturday. Still not sure though. But if I do make it out there, I'll be in a Blue Toyota xtra cab with red campershell. I'll keep an eye out for ya and do stop by for a howdy handshake if you see me.

PMMX,

You thought wrong! Both I and my dad were there and we're also Asian. There were also two other Asian guys there on Saturday. Their Toyota Landcruiser was first in line and we're right behind them on Saturday morning. I think we saw you in Area 4 on Saturday morning near the river.

Back from Christmas Vacation, hope your's was good. Thanks for the response and help.
Have you done many guided trips? Some of them can be expensive but the results seem good.

Live2hunt,

Thanks for the advice!!

I'm hoping to get into the pig-o-rama at Tejon Ranch the end of Jan. I hear the success rate is pretty good, around 50%. Have you every hunted Tejon and or the pig-o-rama?

Hey, I just got a Remington 7400 carbine 30.06 with a synthetic stock about a month and a half ago, Great Gun!! Haven't got a pig with it yet though. Let me ask you something if you don't mind. What rounds do you think are best for pig hunting with that rifle? 150gr, 165gr or 180gr? Round nose Core lok, Spitzer Partition? Also, being a carbine, what do you think the maximum effective range is?

Thanks again,
Condor

Condor, Ive been on 2 guided hunts in King City with great succes. The guides name is Nesson Schmidt. I did some research and he was the least exspensive. That is a cool gun you got! I had no idea what a rem 7400 looked like , so after Live2Hunt told me he was shootin one , i looked on their web site.

I have not been on any of the POR yet. Maybe sometimes in the future I may try it.

Congrats on your new gun. My Rem. 7400 Carbine has served me well since I bought it brand new back in 1994. I've killed all my pigs with that gun. I've tried different brand of ammo and Win. SuperX Power Point 150 gr and Rem. Corelokt 150gr. seemed to work best on my gun. I get 1" grouping at 100 yards. I don't reload so all my ammo are factory made. With that gun I always keep my range within 200 yards, but there has been occasions were I had to make longer shots. I always keep that gun sighted in about 1.5" high at 100 yards. I shot a boar that my Yardage Pro Rangefinder reads 262 yards. I held the crossed-hairs on the boar's spine and it hit him low behind the shoulder.

Live2hunt I have a 3006 remington 7400 too and I agree with you about 150 grain. I shot at a pig at 400 yards at 180 grain at cr a couple of years ago but was hitting under it. This year I changed because I was target practicing at a 100 yards with 180 grain core lok and I couldent get a pattern. So I changed to 150 grain core lok and now I have a good pattern. based on how my gun is shooting im staying with 150 grain core lok. its always good to get out and try the 3006 once in a while

My Springfield 1903 patterns the same way... 180gr = jack squat. 150gr = very tight at 100 yrds (you could put a nickel on 3 out of 5 and it would cover all 3 holes).

Your rifle may be considerably better with 180gr... Who knows? 150gr or 180gr will kill anything in the US if it's placed right. Two exact same make and model rifles, right out of the box, may shoot entirely differently with different grain bullets. What you need to do is take a box of each, 150, 165, 180, to your local range and set up 3 targets at 100 yards. Put five carefull shots at each target. Keep the closest 3 shots.

Make sure you let your rifle breathe between each shot (the barrel may, MAY, warp slightly when it heats up). I find it helpfull to aim at the horrizon between the white paper and the bottom of the round target, NOT the bulls-eye. It makes a very nice, easily visible, line for your horrizontal scope reticle to rest under. All you have to worry about is your perpendicular reticle... your eye will center the horrizontal automatically.

I just tested with Core-Lokt (cheapest factory ammo at Wal-Mart for me). But you could test groups with as money different varieties as you have money. You may find a 180gr Core-lokt shoots better than a 165gr Super X.

You will never know your gun until you spend some time patterning it. In the end, it doesn't matter whether you're using 150 or 185, but whether you can hit the Kill zone on EVERY shot. That's what's important!

This advice comes from a lot of excellent hunters. I took it, and I feel very comfortable with my combination.

Sincerely, "The Other Jesse."

I really like the gun too and even though I've only had it for a short time would recommend it to anyone looking for a semi-auto.

I've heard good things about the King City area but never hunted there. I did hunt some BLM land up past Coalinga last year with no luck. Would you happen to have Mr. Schmidt's number or website? Would like to get more information.

Thanks again,
Condor

Thanks for all the information!

I have tried the 150gr. Win. and the 180gr. Rem Core Lokt. Plus some 180gr. reloads with Sierra bullets. I'm going to try some 165gr. next time.

I also try to get a grouping about 1.5" high at 100yrds. I figure that at 200yrds. they should drop right in there.

Hoping to hunt a POR in the next few months. Will let you know how it goes. Where else would you recommend for some good pig hunting?

Thanks again,
Condor
