just wondering if camping was allowed outside of designated campsites in the panza mountain range? i'd like to be able to stay for last light and camp, then be up and in the middle of it for the first light without having to hike in at 4 in the morning...

evan,
You can dry camp( no fires at all) in the National Forest "most places", but you will need an Adventure Pass to "park" in the forest... There are quite a few improved campgrounds ( La Panza, Queen Bee, Navajo, Hi Mountain, etc)that you can stay at. If you plan on packing in and staying in the Wilderness Area you will need to go to the ranger station on Hi Mt. road and get a wilderness permit, and the Adventure Pass. Also no fires of any kind.
Email me and I can give you more info...

I called the ranger office...they said you are allowed to have campfires as long as you get a fire permit at no cost. i think there's just certain guidelines you have to follow when making your fire, clear burnable things 10ft radius or whatever. not sure exactly what the rules are.
