Welcome. A couple of things you might want to know
1.Cant hunt anything in Calif with lead (Kinda knocks out the 22 LR)
2.Find some blm land or Nat forest -you can hunt their depending on what seasons are open.

Get your hands on Calif hunting regulation info and that can help

Good luck

get OnXmaps that will tell you where NF,BLM, and other lands are in your area that you can scout and hunt.

No one is going you tell where they hunt at. Where is something you're going to have to figure out on your own. Just find public land and explore

Hi, and welcome. Always good to see someone new entering this greatest of human endeavors so connected to the primal acquisition of sustenance.

The first question is, do you have a license? If not, get your hunter safety cert and buy a license. Next, what are you wanting to hunt? There are season restrictions, location restrictions, species and bag restrictions and /weapon restrictions. Know and understand them all. Next, the area you are in(Diamond Bar) has NO public hunting areas. I live down the road from you in Fullerton. That open area in the Brea canyon is not public land(owned by city/oil/and some of it is owned by the Boy Scouts), so unless you have permission you will not be hunting those areas for anything. Not that there would be much there but ground squirrels and maybe some quail.

You are going to need to do some research on what species you are going after and then focus on areas that are open to the public that may hold those animals as mentioned in the post above. People will most likely not give up specific spots, but may point you in the general direction of areas of the state that might have the species you are after. For example the Colorado River basin for doves in September.

Sadly, where you and I live(metro Southern CA), we need to travel long distances to get to areas to enjoy this great activity. There are public areas to hunt in the Santiago peak area which is about the nearest location to where you are. The National Forest in the mountains North of your location is also open to hunting. The biggest area closest to you would either be to the North. Los Padres National Forest in Santa Barbara County or the Cleveland National Forest in Orange and San Diego counties. Be aware that you need to know EXACTLY where the boundaries between public and private are. Without some digital mapping system, it is quite difficult to stay on public land in many instances. Think about getting a subscription.

Lastly, and don't take this the wrong way, are you by chance a recent immigrant? I have met many great people who have recently come to this country from other areas of the globe who are not used to the North American system of game management and the laws that govern hunting/fishing. They come from a country with 0 controls. If you can get there and shoot or catch, you can do it. America and specifically California is not like that. Understand and work with the system so we can all enjoy this great activity.

Good luck and keep asking questions. Most here are helpful and willing to teach.

It takes time and a lot of hiking to find sweet spots. Los padres has paid off in the past for me. Good luck and make sure you shoot straight. Sucks to hike a few days to miss an opportunity.

Angeles National Forest is the closest and best place for you to start hunting. I recommend using the OHV roads that run through the forest. You need at least a two wheel drive pickup, when the roads are dry to get around. I like these maps for the roads.
You can hunt year round for Jack Rabbits. There are restrictions using a rifle in certain areas but you can use your shotgun. You will need a hunting license and probably a Forest Pass? You missed Quail season but that is what you should learn to hunt first. I made some quail hunting videos that show you the type of terrain where quail live. Some of the videos will show you the Forest roads to use. Most of them are in the Angeles NF near Santa Clarita and out to the
I5 near Gorman. Some are in Los Padres National out by Frazier Park.
