Hey Franklin, thanks for keeping the site updated. Unfortunately, the hunt ended with Team Judo and Team Cali tied with 0 hogs for either team ... although I think Team Cali gets penalized for crippling a hog, so that means...

TEAM JUDO WINS!!!

There is a serious note, though, if ya'll saw the post about Dolly. Kinda put a damper on things after that, and it was hard to keep the energy up for Sunday's hunt. I believe most of the guys went out on the blood trail instead of hunting.

The hogs were there, but they were definitely not "out in force" this weekend. I predict much tougher hunting for the winter months.

What's a hunt without a story:

I decided to start my hunt with hitting the canyon i've had the most success in.....won't give ya the name, but many know it...anyway, i wait till first light Friday morning before i start my descent. Light is quickly approaching and i happen to glance to my left, i stare in amazement as a 125lb boar is slowly walking accross the trail i just left. He crosses my track and stops for a quick wiff, while he's doing his best to smell me, i throw the range finder up and get a 42 yards reading. He has no idea i even exist as i'm standing in the wide open of a small clearing. I begin to draw as i notice he's already on the move, behind a tree, down a trail, and now out of range. 75% of my successful hunts happen on the first mornin'...i figured my chance was now gone.
Friday night i hunt the same area again, this time deciding to sit in one place at a trail crossing in hopes of the little turds coming by......that lasted for about 10 minutes as i get a bit anxious and decide to get more aggressive & go find some hogs. After still hunting 100 yards i hear something exhale loudly......could be a deer blowing, but was a bit different. Now i hear a small pig squeal 60 yards ahead of me followed by grunting. It's clear to me that the hogs are bedded in the chamise just above the canyon floor. Looks as if all i have to do is wait till they decide to get up and feed. I ease my way to within 27 yards, 34 yards, & 33 yards of the exiting trails. 10 minutes till dark & i can hear 4 pigs stand & shake as their ears flap the side of their bodies.
2 minutes till dark....they unbelievably head up hill without giving me a glimpse.

Saturday morning i won't give up on a good thing and hit the canyon again, this time getting a bit bored w/ the same screnery, but determined to put an arrow in a hog. I hunt hard, seeing all fresh sign and a bit of lion scat.....9am finds me on top of the knoll looking for pigs making their way to their morning beds. As i take in the warm air, a grunt and squeal from 75 yards wakes me. The pigs seem to be bedded in a small chamise patch, i ease forward and can hear them walking and feeding. I check the wind and get up hill as quietly as possible. In a desperate attempt to sling an arrow, i pick up a heavy branch and throw it downhill hoping the hogs would exit on the trails on 5 yards away...nothing stirs and i hear a squeal 50 yards up hill, they were on the move and what i thought was bedding hogs was hogs slowly moving up a trail. I start to run, only laughing as that seems to work out pretty good for me....i catch the hogs as they enter the chamise and bed down, it's too uphill and the wind is wrong to attempt a stalk. I ease out and begin to think what a 'slam dunk' this will be for my afternoon hunt.

Saturday afternoon had me 35 yards from the small drainage & trail they entered the chamise in.....pigs and deer are different i quickly learned.....i waited untill the sun set & got ready, nothin'! I better do something quick before it gets dark, i ease up the trail and get into position for a possible 'close' quarter shot. The pigs were gone and i know have 15 minutes to hunt. I moving quickly to a small bench that pigs often cross in the afternoons, i ease into the opening looking for anything.....my heart jumps as a covey of quail from just over the rise erupt & land in the tree next to me. Quail should be roosting & something must have flushed'em. I take one step & see a LARGE black boar walk into view, he's 25 yards away and will be at 15 real quick...as i slowly draw back he spots movement, i come to full draw and he comes to full throttle. I whistled, hoping he'd stop and he sure does, w/ only his jaw & nose in view. If he walks forward, he'll be in a opening at what i guessed to be 30 yards, he moves, i shoot.
All i hear is a hog running & remember the sound of a solid hit, just not sure what i hit....no branches are moving and i feel very confident it's good. I ease up to where the pig stood, his tracks are easy to spot, but there's no blood to be found. I'm now looking for my arrow in the dirt and come up empty handed, the pig kicked up plenty of dirt and i made my way 10 yards down the trail finding my arrow w/ good blood and a complete passthru.
My only thought is that i need to find this pig. At a range verified 27 yards the hog was extremely large w/ long snout & exposed teeth.....there was little blood as i must have hit'em high. The story goes on from there & lasts into the night and next day, but unfortunately it doesn't have a happy ending.................unfortunately that was Dolly's last hunt, i carried her out on my shoulder remembering my first hog hunt & how she found that pig....i just wished she wouldn't have found this one.

Thanks for reading.

AS, good story... wish mine was half as interesting (which is why I didn't post up my usual lengthy reminiscence). In keeping with my current streak at Chopper's, I missed an 18 yard, quartering away shot on Friday morning. Should've been perfect, but the hog stepped to the right as I was releasing, and I sent it right past his shoulder.

It's a drag that Dolly met her end on that particular night, but A.S., I'm sure you know that if it wasn't you, any of us could have cripped a hog and set off that chain of events. From the looks of things, it wasn't even your hog that did the damage.

At any rate, I'm sure looking forward to getting back up there and having another go at it.

AS

I sent you an e-mail about the hunt, sorry it all turned out the way it did. You guys I know all to well how a hunt can turn bad in a second. I'm sorry that you guys had to deal with it.

We can hope Chopper can have another dog as good as Dolly someday. SHe was a real sparkplug.

Thank you.
There's a million thoughts in my head right now none i can find do justice to Dolly.
I will remember her as a great and powerful beast who fought and won many battles yet always smiled and acted like a lady.

This weekend has given me a life time of stories to tell, changed my thought process, and I'll be writing a book about it. If you want 1st copy email me. It was a hunt of a life time and I don't think I'd want to ever repeat it!

I'll be back, to Chops!
