Its been a few days and I think I can finally put some coherent thoughts together.
I was finally able to get my buddy (Backcracker) up to Choppers. We've been hunting pigs for a very long time and Backcracker only seen pigs once at FHL and passed on a shot. He's been gettign ribbed for that ever since.
We show up at the cabin early Friday morning and managed to get a few winks (I could have sworn there was a bear in the cabin somewhere.) I get woken up by the sound of teeth being brushed and see AS standing atop the bricks in front of the fireplace likes he's king of the hill. At least he was dressed. I get up and dress up for the hunt. Cecil was nice enough to give me his hunting spot since he wasn't feeling to well. I took Brian to the spot and we proceded to walk through the area. About 3/4 to our turn around point, Brian hears some noises coming from the ridge above us, we pause and see pigs come streaming over the ridgeline straight towards us. Wind in our face, we stay our ground and wait. There were about 15 pigs in the group and I move to get to a better shooting lane. One pig stands there staring at me as I move and does not sound off the alarm. As i find my spot with an arrow nocked, Brian releases on the one looking at me. I hear a squeel and a smile crosses my face as I intrepreted that as a hit for Brian. I release and and hit a branch, then all hell breaks loose. Pigs dont know whats going on and are running in every direction. As I struggle to knock another arrow, a pig passes 2 ft from me. I could have kicked him. All I do is watch him run over to the edge of a ravince, stop, turn around and huff at me, then boil over the edge. I quickly turn around and another pig is headed toward me at a trot, he changes direction and gives me a broadside shot at 10 yards. I release and WHACK, he turns on the afterburners and runs straight to Brian, Brian had to jump aside to avoid being bowled over. I go over to the spot and see my arrow on the ground, no blood, just hair and fatty tissue, huh???, it appears that my arrow bounced off that pig. Not sure if it was the meachanical blades not opening,, hitting the shoulder, or the plate. We couldnt find no blood and no pig. I go over to Brian and he is stoked, legs shaking and all. I could tell he was hooked. He tells me that was worth the price of admission alone. This was one hour into our first hunt on the first day. Brian hasn't seen a pig in six years of hunting them on public land since that infamous day at FHL. We were on pigs the other days also, hearing them mostly, we did get on some more saturday eveningi but we were scented just as I had decided to draw and take a shot.
Alas, Kirk explanied the reason why my arrow popped out, I forgot to lick the suction cup...
Of course, my hunting was over saturday night, I decided to go find this hog Sunday morning that AS shot. I remember the first day of hunting on Choppers almost two years ago. I hunted with AS the morning after he shot his sow, and Dolly joined us to find his pig, sure enough, she was on it in no time. Can't forget the story of Dolly, AS, and BDB going after Steve's pig. She was later described as the Wonder Dog, and she sure was that. I'll miss watching her do her thing and running up to the truck with those longing eyes expecting you to drop your tailgate and haul out a hog, or reluctantly giving up here seat in the Safari Wagon for us to take. Dolly, thanks for the memories and thank you for letting me take your seat so many times...
........but for next year i'd step it up a bit & invest in some 'better' technology, they have those new suction cup dart thingies that look real interesting..see for yourself:
Well I have to say that bubba pretty much summed up the trip. I am hooked and will deffinatley be going back to Choppers!
I think my knee shaked until just about an hour ago and thank god I packed some extra underwear because I tought I was gonna be run over by bubba's rubber arrow target for sure!
Thanks to the rest of the guys for welcoming a newbie to the group, I had a great time!
Brian
Anyone else get a case of poison oak? I got a very small breakout on my hand and on my neck... Not even really a problem but a little itchy. Good thing the outbreak on my hand didn't spread anywhere else, eehhh ummmm.
Funny you should mention that, my last trip a few weeks before your trip was the first time I DIDN'T come down with a nasty case of PO. I was happily surprised!
Haven't got it since I was a kid..'knocking on wood'
Not sure if I'm immune (if that's possible), or I'm just not a willy nilly run into every bush I see to see if there's a hog in there type.... :big grin santa hat:
Anyways, after posting this, I'm sure I'll get it on the next trip...
