hey guys just got back yesterday... wanted to let you all know that where i did not see any pigs at Carrizo Plains, I did see some good signs of them. Misjudged the drive, so we got out there 2 hours too late. :(

But we did mark on our maps some very good rooting prospects. There were 2 big spots that were really fresh, I'd say maybe hours or a day old. Definitely occured after the rain from days ago. I might go back, I might not. Working toward a weekend FHL hunt at the moment.

jamest91, it's nice to hear MY advice worked out for you:bounce-aqua:. On a serious note, it is nice to hear how it went for you. I'm glad to hear you saw some fresh rooting; that is always uplifting when hunting such an area (it's difficult to get into the pigs there).

Best of luck on your future hunts.

chrisamax,
Not sure whom you are refering to.
If for me, there are no units in the Carrizo. It is mostly BLM land and open to the public, yet surrounded by huge private ranches with much better habitat, food and water supplies.
And the hunt out of Bryson/Hesperia was on a couple different leased ranches.

Thanks for your reply. The Units I was referring to can be referenced on the attached. The South Chimineas Unit is currently not open to hunters and has strict requirements when it is open, which is usually Saturdays and Wednesdays during the fall and winter months. View attachment 84739

Ah, the Chimineas, so good yet so difficult.
The swath from hwy 166 to the Carrizo Plain is all private except for the Chimineas, they hold all the keys. And yes, there is a draw for access for hunting.

They are nocturnal right now anyway. I can't image them being out there with water the way it's is. Not sure why? I hunt private land in sb and slo counties. I can't even find any. The wallows are being hit but at night. I think increases in hunters, predators and the drought really have them hunkered down.

Hello all! Thought I would jump on in here and update everyone.

So, as I said, at the time of this posting and my 1st attempt at the mountains I found lots of signs of active pigs. Lots of fresh new agriculture and stuff to bring them in. This being said, my latest trip there not too long ago it was extremely dry with no vegetation or anything anywhere.

It was also very hot and I would venture to agree with id450 in the post above this one for the hotter CA months. It may be a whole different ball game in the cooler and wetter CA months in the Winter and Fall.
