Thinking bout going out to carizzo and lookin for some hogs, but i have no idea where to start. I've only been there once, and only drove about 8 or 10 miles from the old 76 station. I don't want anyone to reveal thier favorite spots or anything, but could anyone at least give me an idea of how far i have to drive from the 76 station? A general area or anything you can tell me. I heard the road thru carrizo runs 100 miles or some such large distance, so w/o some idea of where to go it'll be impossible.

Thanks..

Your going to have to find the hogs for yourself. If anyone knows any spots they are most likely keeping them to them selves. If you find water and a food source chances are they will be their. I would start looking a lot further west of the 76 gas station if I was you (read 30 to 40 miles) you might also head for the hills. They sure won't be in the flats. If you find a spot it will probally yeild hogs year after year.

Well, yea.......thats why i said i don't expect anyone to reveal thier spots. Just wanted a general idea as you gave. (30-40 miles)
I just hope those rain grooves aren't as bad a they were the 1st time i went. 30-40 miles of that could shake the fillings loose from your teeth let alone what they could do to your vehicle !

Yeah, the roads are bad out there. You need to get on roads that are worse than the ones you are describing. Roads that maybe "open seasonaly" and have big tire ruts can be a good place to start. If you drive around long enough you will get what I mean. Remember pigs like agricultural fields.

Not to be discouraging, but the chance of actully seeing a piggie out there, is very slim. I do know from experience. I don't know where they go, but alot of the year they don't seem to be around. I've only seen fresh sign once this year and that was right after a rain. From what I understand during the rain season they sometimes move down into the plains, and the mountains around there. Also from what I hear, the place has been hunted out, or in other words the place got real popular and every hunter within 300 miles started shooting piggies and now the populationis very small, or they have moved on. Don't get me wrong, I will still be out there trying to find piggies on occasion, but I think the key is being in the right place at the right time. Problem is where the right place is I don't know. I don't think anyone really knows, It's all in the luck. Only thing I will say about location is the upper area seems to be the area they used to be hanging out. Also I heard that alot of the Antalope have even moved off the monument and to other areas. part of the herd has been seen quite aways away, and some of the herd is still being seen in the area. I guess the herd has just split up. Seems to me that it's a pretty bad sign when other animals are leaving the area. Anyway, back to the point, check out the caliente ridge and areas surrounding areas. There have been sightings all along the carrizo plains, but 20 miles away from hwy 166 all the way down to the other side is where most of the stories come from. Anyway, good luck hope this helps a little

One thing you have to remember with pigs is that you really can't pattern them. Carrizo plains is huge and have seen rooting in places you wouldn't expect to find them. It's very hot out there in the summer time and hogs aren't fond of the heat. I've witnessed the fresh sign along with Evan. Heck, I think I've even heard them out there, but that could just be my optimistic mind telling me to keep hiking you'll find them. Most of the guys I've talked to that have shot hogs there haven't shot them in the same spot. These animals are like nomads out there. So like Evan said, It's all about being at the right place at the right time.

Good luck!

If you are looking for a place to hunt hogs on public land I would try Cottenwood Creek or camp roberts. When I was a kid I used to see Hogs in there but you couldn't shoot them for some reason. I have never been to CR but I read about guy on JHP hunting there and they seem to have luck.

Shot,

Believe it or not Carrizo holds alot of wild life. Even in the hotter months. Every time I go there I look around and think "why the hell would anything want to live here". And every time I've seen some kind of wild life. I'm not even coming close to saying the pigs are there when it's hot, because as we all know they probly aren't. All I'm saying is don't leave your pig tags at home because it's going to be hot out there, that's one way you are garenteed to see a pig (leave the tags at home). In fact now that I think about it Carrizo holds a bunch of different wildlife. Yotes, pigs, antalope, deer, elk, bobcats, Mt. lions, foxes, as well as quail, dove, chucker, Supposedly condors, you can see all kinds of different stuff there. I wonder what the attraction is? Even the mountains aren't all that impressive. Huh? Oh well, anyone who spends enough time out there will find the piggies. Thought it will probly be a long, long, long time, your bound to see them.

Yote,

I don't know about hearing them, How many times have I told you to eat before we leave camp???

Evan,

I know Carrizo holds a lot of game, I have seen them too. My point was that it gets so hot there that I can't believe anything lives out there, especially a pig in mid summer. And you are so right about leaving the tags at home, you only see an animal that is legal to hunt when you tags are at home. (I swear the pigs could sense that)

Shot,

That brings up a good question, Do pigs have a Sixth sense?? LOL Anyway, I agree with you about the pigs in the heat thing. My post was more of a " I never really thought about that" type thing. I guess while I was posting I started thinkin about the game in that area, and It's kind of a surprise How much game lives there.

Evan III,

The sixth sense is real!!!! I swear everytime I am out in the woods the only animals I see are the ones that I don't have a tag for, especially bears. I wish there was such a thing as a sixth sense blocker, I would buy it in a heart beat.

Evan,

I'll be ready to go when you are! I'll be sure to have a bear tag and a deer tag, along with my pig tags, when we're out there. On another note, what happened to you this past saturday?

I think game hears us slam our car doors, laugh at jokes and yell to others not to do X, Y or Z, or how they should have done X, Y or Z. They don't have a sixth sense but highly sensitive human senses.

As for Carizo, I've been once and didn't see a thing. However, the posts about driving further down the road have perked my interest. That's why this is a great site.
