I udnerstand there's pigs in this area...Was going to try and head out, anyone have any pointers? Also, are you allowed to go wilderness camping on the plain or do you have to camp in the designated campsites? hows the other hunting on the plain? coyotes, jackrabbits, ground squirrels? is there any main sources of water on the plains that I should stick to to find hogs?

I've been to Carrizo a few times and never seen any hogs. I was there on the opener for quail and my we hunted with some guys my buddy knew. After our morning hunt they said that last season when they were at Carizzo, was in the middle of quail season and they jumped over a few ridges. One of the last ridges they crested there was a fat sow sitting under a tree. All they had was birdshot and no pig tags. They just watched her for awhile until she got up and moved on. I have see little sign around a few areas I like to hunt there. I dont know if they allow primative camping there. I highly doubt it. I wouldnt want to throw a tent out just anywhere there, to dang hot. Stay at KCL campground if you can. At least you can get under some trees that will give you a little protection from the sun. Bring a 22 cal or small calibur rifle for the rabbits. Had a blast shooting the rabbits with the rifles last year. Watch out for the rattlers this time of year, they will be out. I only know of one area to get water there and its at camp. Other than that I havent seen any standing water. Good luck.....

Evan,
Last year, it was still allowed to go camping on the plains. Also, it is prohibited to hunt or shoot a certain distance(100 yds.?????) from a water source(spring, brook, trough etc.). Small game & big game hunting is allowed in the proper season. The best thing is to access the Bureau of Land Management website on the "Carrizo Plains Nationa Monument". Google will find it for you on their search box. The rules may have changed since last year. It is best to check out the rules yourself rather than rely on 3rd party info, including mine. The BLM Law Enforcement Rangers are aggressively patrolling & checking the Carrizo P.N.M. since 9/11/'01. Be safe. God Bless. larrysogla.

I was out there during this last winter hunting rabbits a couple of times mainly close to Soda Lake road, did not see any areas that looked promising. I talked to either a ranger or F&G guy who was patrolling and he said he hadn't see or heard of any in those parts in a couple years but they have been around the southern portion. He said they hadn't been there because it had been so dry but that was before all the rains we had. Since all of the rains I have been meaning to get up there and check it out myself but hadven't made the trip yet. Good luck.

There are pigs there, they are just really hard to find. Carl (Gnn961) and I each took a hog from there on the same morning. We've also spent plenty of time there not seeing a single hog either. Shot at plenty of coyotes also.

Good points all around...
But I think hunts hits the nail on the head... "We've also spent plenty of time there not seeing a single hog either."
It's very big country and alot like the needle in a haystack...
Gunner puts an X on the most frequently noted spot...
Good luck
