Bishop, Congrats ! Nice Pig !
From looking at the body size tusk size ratio of your pig and the others from the website they looked like barrow hogs, nutless wonders ! Did your pig still have his nards ? Without their jewels they're not interested in fighting so their fangs don't get all busted up. Also they don't get all scared up. I think it's the best of both worlds, nice teeth for the wall and meat thats not totally tough. The pigs on the website DID have great dental work !
Do many of the pigs go over 200 lbs. ? $400 to $800 or even $500 to $800 is a pretty steep upgrade for a couple of pounds. Wow, great pig BANG ! oh crap 205 lbs. !
Were the hunters falling all over each other or was there a lot of space ?
Mntngoat: He skidded to a stop, rolled down hill about 10 feet, kicked a couple times and was dead.
Bwana: He was as you described, barrow. Mine was about 180#-200#. I saw some that looked like they'd go 250# - 275#. The big ones tend to be loners. If you see a group, their ussually 125# - 150#.
The price ia $500.00 for all pigs, and $350.00 for exotics. The $800.00 is only if you shoot a wet sow.
The ranch is a square mile, and they only allow 10 hunters during the weekend, so there's plenty of room to move around without bumping into each other. The two of us were the only ones hunting friday evening. Some more came in saturday and some left saturday night. So on average you have 6-8 hunters out at any time.
I guess wet sow means nursing ? . . . or pregnant ?
The place sounds pretty nice. A dall sheep for $350 that sounds pretty unbelievable ! I think this place deserves more than a casual glance. Thanks
I was thinking of going hunting there for a bison or and goat.
Did you see any good looking Bison or exotics while you were on the ranch Bishop?
I do not want to go if they only have a few farm yard sheep and small Bison. It will be kind of a meat hunt so I want a large Bison.
How far in advance do you need to make a reservation? Would a hunt this weekend be to soon?
Mel: You can check in as early as 2pm friday and hunt untill they lock up sunday. They closed up at noon sunday because everyone had to get back for mothers day. I don't know what their normal closing would be on sundays.
Tom: They don't bring in the exotics unless you order one in advance. They use to keep them on the ranch, but the mountain lions, coyotes, and bears snacked on exotics, so there's only a few on the ranch at a time, unless you order a specific kind. I only saw a Spanish goat and a Hawaiian Ram when I was there.
The big boars hold their own against the preditors, but the sheep and goats are pretty easy prey.
I made reservations about 3 weeks in advance, but there were some openings a couple weeks earlier. You just need to call and see if the weekend is full.
Even so a square mile isn't that large, and with 40 to150 piggly wigglies that
might put the odds on the hunters side. Of course you can't see how steep the canyons get under those green canopies. 100 foot deep knife blades might complicate things a bit. It also looks like they could get rich if poison oak was a cash crop. There must be a reason I keep coming back to this thread ?
I havn't been there, but I no that Bill is great friends with the guys at Big Horn Canyon ranch. And from talking with him (Bill), he told me the guys from Big Horn will help him get started on this ranch about 1.5 years ago. Hope its not the same joke as Big Horn
Thanks for the report on your hunt and the new place. I put Cedar Canyon in the guide/outfitter review section if you want to add your story there. I borrowed your pic too.
