What TO said is close to right on at the present time.
I called them and they are supposed to open a few more roads in the future.
If you go on the website you will see the proposed roads but defiantly not yet.
Right now you will need to have a good set of legs to get around.
I have been there and there is pig sign in a lot of places but they may move 5 miles or more in a day.
My only suggestion is to find water, cause they have to drink.
Just be prepaid to hike and take water with you.

Update to CCMA.
The road to New Idera is now totally closed off by a gate.
You will have to get a number to the combination lock on the gate.
You can only get the number from BLM Holister office.
It will count as 1 of you 5 days that they let you have per year every time you get the combination to the gate.
There is a gate is on both ends of the road.
Free yes, but not a good deal.
Effectively the BLM has taken control of the road and does give us access to the non hazardous area.
This effectively stops anyone from using any area of the CCMA without getting a pass from BLM.
It also limits you to 5 days per year even if you are going to the area that is listed by BLM as not being hazardous.
At best this is very poor management by BLM.
At worst this is just another gov land grab that we pay them to inflect upon us through our taxes and politions.
The politicos just doing their thing working for the special interest groups, giving them control over our public land.
Why am I surprised, I'm not, it's just another day at the office in our liberal ( just got love those dems) culture in which we live.
BTW the people in the field working for BLM are great people and this is not thier fault.

The place is wildly contaminated with Mercury and Asbestos. Its basically a hazardous waste dump and I'm surprised they'll let anyone in there at all. The water coming from the mercury mine is ORANGE it's so badly contaminated.

I agree there is some contamination, however that not an excuse for how it is being managed.
There are a lot of hunting animals (bobcat coyote, rabbit, squirrel, small pigs, forked horn bucks etc...) that will not be affected by the contamination.
Asbestos is an air born lung issue and does not migrate to the flesh of the animal.
I certainly would not eat any fish from there because of the Mercury nor would I drink the water.
There is about 20k to 30k acres that are not contaminated that we can not access because of the access issues.

even if part of the land is not contaminated, would it even be safe to eat a hog from around there? Hogs move around a lot and can cover miles and miles. I would think that hogs don't know sum parts are safe and some are not. So it would be a big risk to eat any thing that lives on or around this land.

hey guys, so i went to CCMA this past weekend with a buddy. Got in late and hit it hard in the morning, we saw nothing for pigs except some tracks from the last rain (2 weeks ago) not a ton tho. saw some rooting but it was even older. We saw one hen turkey on a hill and that was it. we set up for turkeys in a few spots with no responses all weekend. we were in the condon area and the camp sites were cool and new but for the hunting it wasnt much. no gobbling in the morning in the distance or anything. had a great time but no meat forthe freezer. Owell. it was fun!!
