Hello All, I'm trying to put together an elk hunt for me and two other friends. I've been wearing out the Colorado website for information but have yet to find any advice on best bets for pulling tags and accumulating Preference points. We would like to hunt early archery (cow or bull). I guess an ideal tag to have would be an either sex tag. I am to understand some units allow over the counter either sex tags? From all of the data I've been reading on the site it is generally a few years before you pull an either sex tag in a limited tag unit. Would putting in for points on our first choice as a group and trying to buy OTC tags be the best bet? Any pros and cons on possible ways to put in for tags would be greaty appreciated. We are not hung up on trophy bull units as much as we want as many options at taking either sex for our first elk hunt.

Thanks, Jeff

A large portion of the state is OTC for archery tags. You can buy and OTC archery tag that is good for either Bull or Cow, or just a Cow liscense. The limited draw areas for archery can take from 0 to any number of points to draw. Check out this link (http://wildlife.state.co.us/huntrecap/index.asp) Look at the Hunt Recap Summaries and the Drawing Summaries for the units you are interested in. Between those two you can figure out the points needed for a particular unit.
