I plan to pack my cow elk out in parts on my back in CO and need to know what I have to do with the tag to stay legal. I would prefer to bone it and just pack out the meat for weight considerations.

Also, I figure I have to wear blaze vest and hat?

If anyone can tell me what the legal requirements are I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

Best source for answers to your questions:

http://wildlife.state.co.us/RulesRegs/Regulations/

Law does require that proof of sex remain attached to the meat. If you pack out a cow, you need to leave proof of sex on one of the quarters. They do check, and you will be ticketed... or at the very least warned if made a good faith effort. I speak from experience on this one.

But best thing is to download those regs and read 'em through. The CO DOW is also really helpful answering your questions, so give them a call.

For muzzle loader and rifle, yes. I don't think you do for archery, but double check the regs....

And you have to keep it attached until you get out of CO. All you need to do is leave a couple nipples attached to the meat. You can have everything boned out and cut up, you just need to show some nipples attached.

And yep on the vest and hat. I think you can do vest and gloves but it’s just easier to do the vest/hat combo. And I might be wrong but I swear a Game Warden and a hunter were arguing over a hunters vest. He had a camo one on (the orange one with black tree limbs). The Warden said it didn’t count. I don’t think he got a ticket thou.

You must leave evidence of sex attached. I usually attach my tag to the biggest piece of meat... cut a small hole through the muscle, thread a string through with the tag attached. You MUST wear blaze orange (I forget the minimum amount - just wear a hat and shirt/vest). The Blaze Orange must be the bright hunting blaze orange, not just an orange shirt. And you CAN'T wear blaze orange camo (the kind with tree limbs, black spots, etc.).

IT’S AGAINST THE LAW TO:
25. Not wear at least 500 square inches of solid DAYLIGHT FLUORESCENT
ORANGE material in an outer garment above the waist while hunting
deer, elk, pronghorn, bear or moose during a firearm season. Part of the
fluorescent orange must be a hat or head covering visible from all directions.
Camouflage orange does not qualify. Mesh garments are legal but not
recommended. We strongly recommend wearing daylight fluorescent
orange clothes in the field even if you’re not hunting.

EVIDENCE OF SEX, ANTLER POINTS
1. It is illegal to have or transport a big game carcass without evidence
of sex naturally attached. It is illegal only to have evidence of sex
accompany the carcass. If you submit a deer or elk head for CWD testing,
leave evidence of sex on the carcass.
2. Evidence of sex is:
a. Buck/Bull: Head, with antlers or horns, attached to carcass, or testicle,
scrotum or penis attached to carcass.
b. Doe/Cow: Head, udder (mammary) or vulva attached to carcass .
