Colo Nonresident License

Hello everyone,

I hunted Colorado area# 42, back in 1988, that was my last big game adventure, this area
to whom is not familiar it's located around Grand Junction and the town of Rifle,
I was planning going back next year to hunt cow elk and mule deer, but the problem is
to understand all of these regulations, and area drawing, unlimited, limited, wooow!!
my head it's gonna explode

.Last time I remember, I walked into a gun store and
I said I need a license and deer tag, and they told me fill it up and pay this amount $$$ .
So what's the deal today if I want to hunt in area #42, can someone explain please??
I don't want to hunt somewhere's else cause I know this area well, never hunted others
areas anywhere in Colo.

So, how can I get a cow elk and a deer tag for that area ??
Can I purchase one over there same day season opens ??
And yes!!!, I read the Colo Brochure on the Web, but still cannot understand many parts
of it, specially the unlimited, limited part!! what is that ???.

Assuming your rifle hunting? If so, area 42 is an unlimited area which means you can buy a bull tag over the counter at most conveniance stores etc. keep in mind with an unlimited type license their is a four point restriction on bulls. If you want a cow tag then you have to put in for the draw in order to have a chance at getting a license. Looking at the previous numbers getting a cow tag shouldn't be a problem, meaning you shouldn't need any pref. points.

Deer licenses have been draw only for the last few years which means you will have to put in for the draw to have a chance at getting a deer tag.

In summary, get a brochure and put in for a cow tag and a buck tag for unit 42 next year. If you forget you can always buy a bull tag when you get to Colorado but you will be out of luck for the deer tag unless there are left overs.

Well come Febuary or so they'll mail out the regs and the instructions are shown at 1st grade level. Or you can apply online and it will pretty much not let you make a mistake.

Just look for the codes

DM-041-02R or DM-041-03R for Buck deer and it will be the same for the cow elk except EF-042-02R or 03R depending on which season you want to hunt.

Its pretty easy, you should have no problem

Ok ChrisS, so this 4 point restriction antlers bull, in your Colo hunter opinion for the area
# 42, what's the success rate?? %%, cause I remember last time I hunted there didn't
see any bulls not even spike, but there were a few cows.

And you guys said that feb the new booklets come out , now if I apply for deer/cow elk,
when I can send my application and $$$, what's the soonest ??
and once they received my application and $$$, when I would know if got selected for that
area, and my chances of getting a deer tag what's your guess ??,
and you stated that cow elk tag I can get one for sure?? and over the counter ??
I don't have any preferece points, this will be my first time for a drawing.
Any of these hunts deer and cow elk, are for any hunting season??
Last Q, is this drawing system it's for Colo residents too ??, or only for nonres..

Well, I don't have any special degree but manage to figure out how to apply every year!

I'll try to answer your questions the best I can.

As far as success rate I have know idea. I've never hunted that area and got all the info. I relayed to you from DOW publications. You can look at harvest stats and such on the web site but it would probably really confuse you so a phone call to one of the DOW offices might be your best bet.

After the new regs come out you can apply and send your money any time you want before the deadline which should be somwhere around the first part of April. You should be able to find out if you got the license or not on-line usually sometime in June. Or you can wait a couple more weeks until they send your results to you in the mail.

Looking at last years numbers for both deer and cow elk in unit 42 it took 0 points to get a license so your odds of getting one or both should be really good. Once again you can look at the number of licenses available compared to how many people put in for them on the DOW web site. (This might be another question to ask if you make a phone call to one of the DOW offices). You will get a better idea of your odds after looking at these numbers. Although they won't be the same every year it at least gives you some what of an idea what to expect. I can tell you looking at the numbers that your chances of drawing either license will be alot better in the 3rd and 4th seasons compared to the 2nd season.

No you can't get a cow tag over the counter unless there are left overs. Only bull tags are sold over the counter for unit 42.

When you apply for a license you will have to pick which season you want to hunt. First season is elk only so if you want to hunt both Deer and Elk you should look at 2nd, 3rd or 4th season.

Yes residents have to go through the same application process as non residents. It may seem confusing at first but once the new regs come out look over them and I'm sure it will start to make sense to you. They really aren't that confusing.

The codes are simply used to identify which license your applying for, like I said above it will make more sense once you have a good look at the regs.

If you access the CDNR website, it will give you an abundance of info., including draw percentages, harvest statistics, and many other helpful guides. I am planning a DIY Elk hunt in NW Colorado next fall, and have researched pretty thoroughly to find info. I also have printed maps of the area I want to hunt, topographical, and otherwise. It will actually give you areas of concentration, and areas of production and travel corridors. Use it to your advantage, it can be very helpful!!!!
