Anyone have name of good trusted outfitter to hunt elk in Colorado with decent rates, good service and a great hunt. I would like to hunt with muzzleloader or bow just because it does not cut into my midwest whitetail chasin'. Any guidance would be appreciated. Any idea how many preference points it will take to pull the tag for mloader?

We have friends we met on CO elk & deer hunts in the Piceance Creek area of Little Hills west of Meeker, it was all open hunting lands owned by the State of CO & BLM.They've been trying to draw muzzle loader hunting tags w/o success for several years. They decided to go to the Arapahoe NF area last year & bought an otc cow & bull tags one friend shot the largest cow in a large group, the other 3 hunters had bull tags but never saw any legal 4 point or better bulls just spikes,1x2's,2x2's, 2x3's & 3x3's.They also saw several Moose and evidence of black bear near their camp.

Friends from CA told me about an area in CO where they had been going hunting for several years so we drove there & had successful mule deer hunts. We met a group from the east who were hunting elk & deer in the Piceance Creek area of Little Hills west of Meeker, saw them year after year & became friends when they needed help retrieving a downed mule deer. They've been trying to draw muzzle loader hunting tags w/o success for several years in CO. Last year they went to an area north of Steamboat Springs & bought otc cow & bull tags one friend shot the largest cow in a large group the other 3 hunters had bull tags but never saw any legal 4 point or better bulls just spikes,1x2's,2x2's, 2x3's & 3x3's.They saw a lot of Moose and fresh bear tracks nearby their camp.Never had a guide in CO but did see a lot of guys get ripped off by "guides" who took their clients in the same open hunting areas we all used. There are ranches near Meeker,CO that have hunting for mule deer & elk, one I heard about is the Nine Mile Guest Ranch 9 miles north of Meeker do a google search of that area it has been an elk & deer producer. At one time the area around Meeker had the largest migrating mule deer herd in the world .In 1999 when we last ventured to CO & saw no elk, I contacted the CO Game Dept Feb 3rd 2000 to find out where the elk were in 1999 they told me there were 15000 elk in Indian Valley north of State Hwy 64 & Rio Blanco Lake west of Meeker. The elk changed their migration route after fires ruined the Little Hills range lands they migrate from the White Mtns & stay north of Hwy 64.

I have been checking on some drop camps that will horse pack it out for you for $1,500 a 8 day CO hunt. If I just want to see some elk I can go look at the herd by the hiway near Bishop, Ca.

Didn't he say that you have a better chance going during the archery hunt? He said the weather was better and there was less pressure I guess. The guys in the Montana booth next to his told me the same thing.

Muzzle loader is draw only, if I'm reading the regs correctly. There are no OTC tags for this season.

BTW, nice yellowfin! Polaris Supreme or RRIII?

Awesome buck, what part of the state? and what successs rate have you had? Most non res tags are OTC and all archery, lots of outfitters to chose from too. Need one or two guys to share driving and camp with, $1,000 for a drop in camp is not bad , and they will pack out your elk too.

We've been staying at a place called "Bucks and Bulls" near Meeker, CO. The last two years we killed some very good deer. The elk on the other hand have been hit and miss. We usually buy cow tags and we had 4 bulls walk right by us with no tags in our pocket.
<
Our group did manage one cow elk last year. The owner charges us $35 per night to stay in a trailer on his property and we hunt public land. We buy all of our tags OTC as leftovers once the draws are over. We bring our own food up with us and split gas. I can see if we are going to have an opening if you really want to go.

The deer in my pic is from California in D11, not Colorado.

Hunteverything,

I've been hunting for a few years with Dark Timber Outfitters (http://www.darktimberlodge.com), and recommend them. My brother and I did have a bad experience last fall with a "back-up" guide, but Rick, the outfitter, is making it good for us. The service and accomodations are super, and the hunting is great.

This is Unit 62, which is all OTC and either-sex for archery. ML takes a few points to draw, but it is probably the ideal time to be there.

Drop me a line for more info if you'd like.
