You have to have your packet in to Colorado DOW by April 1 for drawings, unless that has changed. I used to hunt it every year in the 1980's.
We hunted Unit 33 for elk (huge herds in that unit) and got ok sized deer in the same unit. It is east of Grand Junction north of the I-70. Going in as easterly direction, the towns on the I-70 are Rifle, Silt, and Newcastle. We drove northwest from New Castle up the 245 all the way up to Triangle Park and Meadow Lake, basically aroung 9,000 feet elevation with good maintained dirt roads. This was a popular area with tons of hunters, but also large herds at the time. The area is covered by the White River National Forest map. I've never hunted any other unit.
Bull tags were over the counter. I had a draw cow tag last time I went. And of course all deer tags are now draw in Colorado. This may not be the best place to go nowadays, I don't know, but it is mostly rolling flat top plateau with canyons you can walk down into.
I've seen a lot of other units mentioned here on JHO so try a search. We had lots of fun there back in the day, but our California bunch broke up after we all moved to different places. We used to stock up on supplies in Rifle.
Nowadays the DOW has links to the migration trails for deer and elk, searchable by Game Management Unit (GMU). Researching and planning is half the fun of a do it yourself hunt in a new place! Good luck and have fun.
If you can get on private, thats your best bet. The Northwest has the most elk, but the herd size has come down recently, hence the reason Nonresident cow tags will be $350 next year.
The area's around Craig & Meeker would be a good starting point.
