Alright fellas, looking for a little advice. I am new to hunting Colorado, last year was my first time. I connected on a 5x5 bull during the second rifle season, and now I wanna go archery during the rut. Are there any good OTC units for archery near Meeker?

There are OTC archery licenses available, just curious if any of the units near Meeker, like 21 & 22, if they're any good or not. But thanks for the tip.

Yeah, I spent a day in 211 and another day in 22. Didn't see any elk, but I saw sign near Piceance Creek and Yellow Creek in 22, just curious. I'm gonna put in for he unit 12 draw, but debating on an OTC archery hunt in the meantime. Just wondering if it's worth spending the money on the tag. I'll be out here next spring/summer scouting for rifle season, gonna look deeper into 22 and decide then. I really want to do an archery elk hunt during the rut.

Not interested in guided hunts. I am a DIYer. But I looked further into the matter and called Colorado DOW and found that there are OTC archery tags available in the Grand Mesa National Forest, and the draw odds for GMU 12 are about every other year for nonresident hunters. So a hunting I will go next year! If I can swing it I will do OTC archery and OTC rifle too.

I am just curious why you guys go so far into Colorado. The area in the Southern part of the San Juan mountains has all kinds of elk. This area has a lot of the Chama herd that has plenty of big elk and plenty of OTC tags and all kinds of public land. Just my curiosity.

Last year was my first time. Just went with my uncle. Haven't had a chance to explore more areas yet.

That is a great reason. Wish I could go with more family sometimes. Will be my brother and I this year so that is good.

That would be a good time. If it falls through you can always tag along with us. We are heading in for the last week of archery. Taken camp on our backs and hiking into the wilderness. Not sure show old you are how old you are, but you would have to keep up with a 40 year old and one that is within a few years of it.

Thanks for the invite, I'll keep that in mind. I'm 30 and a chunky butt. But looks can be deceiving. I outhike most of my buddies who are in better shape than me. I usually carry an overloaded pack anyway, trying to have anything I might need in an emergency. Me and my 70 year old uncle packed out my bull last year on our backs in the snow, uphill. A grueling 100 yards to the truck lmao. Got him out in 3 hours. One thing the Marine Corps gave me is a strong back and strong legs. Life in an infantry battalion will do that, since we carry everything on our backs on humps. If my plans fall through I will be in touch, but also don't mind going solo either.

Tri2hunt,

Is that invite open to us newbie bowhunters who already live in CO? I really want to knock one down!

It can be, but I can't take everybody. Maybe a PM to discuss. With as many posts as you have I will find it hard to believe you are a newbie.

You're gonna love it. Jumped into the archery arena about 7 years ago, and fell in love. I used to long distance rifle shoot, but anybody can do that with a calculator and the right rifle/ammo combo. But archery takes patience, determination, and skill. I can't wait to do an archery elk hunt!

I've been threatening to head over to CO and hit it hard with an OTC Elk tag. Just haven't had a season come along when school and/or a better draw tag elsewhere got in the way. Looking forward to seeing your results. Sounds like a fun, challenging hunt. Good luck!
